CONTROL SYSTEMS TECHNICIAN 2 - South Florida Water Management District

About the Job
Entry level technician learns to handle mission-critical duties/responsibilities to SFWMD's Operations Control Center (OCC), which requires 24-hour, seven days a week operation. Performs standardized or prescribed assignments involving a sequence of related monitoring and operations. Extracts engineering data from various prescribed sources; processes the data following well defined methods; presents the data in designated format.
Maintains and updates databases, logs, daily hydrographs, and reports. Examines routine data to detect critical conditions and advises water manager of abnormal conditions and requests guidance for unstable situations. Monitors system for alarms and adjusts gates and/or pumps when necessary. May coordinate information with the Corps of Engineers. May communicate emergency efforts between District, local and state governmental agencies.
Work schedule includes rotating/varied shifts, rotating/split days off, staggered hours (which may change on short notice), weekend, holiday duty, overtime, and extended hours.
Effectively practices and applies fundamental technical competencies in engineering support. Applies competencies to work that is routine and standard. Has good basic research, testing, analytical, problem solving, presentation and verbal/written communication skills. Has good computer and database systems aptitude and proficiency.
Possess fundamental skills in Engineering Technology, Electronics or related field. Knowledge or remote control systems technology, algebra, trigonometry, plane/solid geometry, and mathematical tables.
Has the ability to use multiple PCs with advanced SCADA systems software. Has the ability to read and interpret operational data, plans, and maps. Is familiar with engineering instruments and equipment. Has the ability to quickly analyze, correlate, and present factual data in graphic form; adapt new technology and methods to increase program effectiveness; prepare work reports/operations logs and effectively communicate with others in person, telephone and using radio systems. Will adhere to all applicable statutes, laws, policies, and procedures. Has the ability to work well under pressure and in a team environment.
This position may be filled at either the Control Systems Technician 2 or the Control Systems Technician 1 level.
Employment Guidelines:
Control Systems Technician 2: Associates' Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Electrical Power Technology, Instrumentation and Operational Controls, Electronics or related field and 2+ years of experience. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Control Systems Technician 1: Associates' Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Electrical Power Technology, Instrumentation and Operational Controls, Electronics or related field and less than 2 years of experience. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
As this position works on a rotating 24/7/365 day work schedule, shift experience preferred, but not required.
Licenses / Certifications:
Valid State of Florida Driver's License is required.
Physical Requirements / Working Environment:
Due to the District's response role and in the total scope of emergency management, this position may at times, be required to provide support before, during and after major storm events and emergency situations, such as hurricanes or other declared emergencies, depending on assigned emergency response role.
