Summary:
The main function of a construction manager is to plan, direct, or coordinate activities in such fields as engineering, research and development, financial systems and product roll-out, etc.
Job Responsibilities:
" Coordinate projects, making detailed plans to accomplish goals and directing the integration of technical activities.
" Present and explain proposals, reports and findings to clients.
" Recruit employees, assign, direct, and evaluate their work, and oversee the development and maintenance of staff competence.
" Analyze technology, resource needs and market demand, to plan and assess the feasibility of projects.
" Confer with management, production and marketing staff to discuss project specifications and procedures.
" Review and recommend or approve contracts and cost estimates.
Skills:
" Verbal and written communication skills, problem solving skills, attention to detail and interpersonal skills.
" Ability to work independently and manage one s time.
" Knowledge of production processes, quality control, costs and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.
" Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, and production methods.
" Knowledge of computer software, such as MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Project, Visio etc.
Education/Experience:
" Bachelor's degree in business administration or a related field.
" PMI or PMP certification preferred.
" 10+ years experience required.
Years of experience required Years of experience required - 10+ years of experience in construction, data center experience is a must (10+ years of experience). More construction experience than data center experience is ok, they will teach them the rest. Must have built a data center in their past life.
" Ask candidates how many megawatts have they been involved in constructing is a great question to test them on their abilities and their experience level.
" Would like to see what they executed and if they were responsible for commissioning it.
Degrees or certifications required - No degree with experience is ok, but would like to see someone who has a construction management, architectural, or engineering degree in construction engineering/development to some aspect.
" Electrical engineering background is a prime candidate (they have experience of dealing with scale & magnitude of the power they use).
" Someone on mechanical engineering side will suffice but electrical would be more idea. Construction will deal with all facets of disciplines, civil, electrical, plumbing, which makes them very valuable. Commissioning background would be ideal in addition to construction.
Best vs. average Build data centers for Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Salesforce, Equinox, Turner Construction, or other fortune 100 companies. That would be ideal, and the sponsor would love to see candidates with those work history backgrounds.
Performance indicators being able to build a relationship with the onsite general contractors and communicating with them well. If this doesn t happen safety concerns will happen more often, audits will not be taking place etc.. Being able to create an analysis on incidents/reports and what to do to prevent this.
