Communication Aide - Regional Day School - Temple Independent School District

Primary Purpose:

Assist the teacher of the deaf in providing for instructional needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing in the deaf education and general education setting. The communication facilitator assists in the implementation of classroom programs, including self-advocacy, behavior management and instruction. The communication facilitator works under the RDSPD coordinator and/ or campus principal and the immediate direction of a certified teacher.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

• Assist teacher of the deaf in preparing instructional and other materials and classroom displays
• Assist with administration, scoring and recording of data of objective testing instruments or work assignments.
• Help maintain neat and orderly classroom
• Adhere to universal protections
• Help with inventory, care and maintenance of equipment
• Adhere and support campus and classroom discipline as prescribed by the classroom teacher and principal
• Help teacher of the deaf keep administrative records and prepare required reports
• Conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher, work with individual students or small groups
• Help supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom. This includes the lunchroom, bus, playground duty, bathroom or diapering duty or any other duty assigned by the RDSPD coordinator, campus principal or teacher of the deaf.
• Keep the teacher of the deaf informed of special needs or problems of individual students to include parental or general education concerns.
• Participate in staff development training programs to improve job performance.
• Participate in faculty meetings and special events as assigned.
• Maintain confidentiality at all times.
• Perform other duties as assign by RDSPD coordinator

Qualifications:

Certified as outlined in NO Child Left Behind Act

Education:

High School Diploma or GED and “Highly Qualified” training certification; or at least 48 hours of college or an associate degree.

Experience:

Experience working with children who are deaf and hard of hearing.

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Ability to work well with children who are deaf and or hard of hearing, ability to follow verbal and written directions, schedules and Deaf Education programs as directed by the teacher of the deaf or principal. demonstrate proficiency in using sign language, ability to communicate effectively, ability to maintain confidentiality in all situations in or out of the school environment.
