About the Job
The Department of Management and Finance (DMF) is seeking a Commercial Real Estate Appraiser for the Office of Real Estate Assessment Division. This position will work on a team responsible for developing and defending annual assessments of commercial real estate throughout Arlington County utilizing Direct Sales Comparison, Income, and Cost Approaches to valuation. The Real Estate Appraiser is responsible for managing a commercial mass appraisal assignment throughout the year which includes, defending assessments before the Board of Equalization (BOE), collecting data in the field, inspecting all new construction and permit work within assigned trend area, assisting the public with questions and explaining policies over the phone, in the office or in the field.
Appraisers must have the ability to work remotely, maintain a productive work schedule and manage one’s time and assignments in a flexible remote work environment. They must be able to meet the requirements of having days in the field for inspections of properties, days working remotely online and days in the office providing availability and coverage for the public.

Specific duties include:
- Reviewing assessment appeals, preparing for BOE presentations and presenting the findings of appeals before the BOE and Circuit Court;
- Meeting with taxpayers, property tax representatives and attorneys to discuss property appeals;
- Entering and analyzing data gathered from Income and Expense documents and utilizing that data to develop guidelines to value commercial property;
- Reviewing and researching commercial sales that are recorded in the Land Records;
- Reviewing commercial permits and new construction to ensure accuracy;
- Using Computer-Assisted Mass Appraisal and Mobile Assessor software to collect, input, analyze and retrieve appraisal data and make recommendations for valuation; and
- Providing written or verbal real estate assessment information to the public, over the phone or in person at the County office
