Job Description
esVolta seeks motivated and energetic candidates to join our asset management team as Commercial Director to support overall project operations for utility-scale battery energy storage projects, from late-stage development through operations. The role will report to the company’s VP of Asset Management and will work closely with other department team members to resolve commercial issues and minimize commercial risk for operating Projects from late-stage development to operations handover, focused primarily on Service / O&M related contracts.
The Commercial Director will work with the Procurement, Finance, and Legal teams in leading service contract negotiations, and contract risk analysis. This role will support Asset Managers with claims analysis, project risk analysis, commercial strategy, and change orders. Support will also be provided to the VP of Asset Management for overall portfolio risk management and development of processes to improve safety, quality, budget, and compliance on esVolta projects. The Commercial Director will collaborate with the Asset Management team, including Technical Operations Director, from project execution to operations ensuring compliance with contractual terms and conditions for BESS/EMS/O&M contractors and 3rd party suppliers.

Key Responsibilities
- Overall responsibility for developing portfolio risk management process for operating projects post-COD.
- Lead negotiations of Service contracts in close collaboration with Procurement, Owner’s Engineers, O&M contractors, and 3rd party ISPs. This would include both commercial and legal terms as agreed with corporate counsel.
- Develop and implement a standardized commercial operations / contract management process with a focus on improving commercial terms and conditions in supplier contracts; and improving financial outcomes in contract execution through development of tools and training for asset managers.
- Analyze contract terms and pricing for systemic risks and work with Procurement and Asset Management to ensure appropriate actions and mitigations are in place.
- Support Asset Managers with resolution of commercial issues on projects by providing commercial and legal assistance on specific issues.
- Responsible for the development and deployment of commercial strategy and policy for projects through the publication of commercial playbooks, contract terms and conditions, and best practices
- Evaluate impact of commercial terms on project OpEx and IRR and devise commercial strategy for risk management and returns optimization.
- Work with Asset Manager to analyze the completion of key goals during operations. Maintain production logs for work put in place for future reference for project lessons learned, and schedule and budget forecasting.
Safety
- Collaborate with HSE, ESG teams and Asset Managers in developing and executing site specific safety program and activities.
- Maintain operational knowledge of operations safety, OSHA, ANSI, NFPA, and other applicable standards, regulations, laws, and procedures.
Skills and Requirements
- 10 years’ experience in a project environment with exposure to engineering, procurement, construction, and operations aspects of projects.
- Familiarity with battery energy storage design and project operations preferred.
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel, Teams, and Smartsheets.
- Superior communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal.
- Outstanding interpersonal skills, including an ability to maintain calm and effective exchanges by all parties during stressful situations, and executive level reporting that ensures timely action and decision making in time-pressured scenarios.
- Bachelor’s and/or graduate degree in Engineering or similar discipline if/where applicable.
- Strong negotiations and commercial analytical skills.
- Self-motivated with an ability to own and lead resolution of difficult issues with a sense of urgency.
- Strong organizational, project and time management skills.
- Familiarity with electric power industry data and reporting requirements (NERC, ISO/RTO, etc.)
- Some travel will be required.
