The Building & Safety Division is part of the Community Development Department, which also consists of Code Enforcement, Economic Development, Housing, and CDBG Administration. The Building & Safety Division issues permits for all new construction or modifications to existing developments (commercial, residential or industrial) in the City. It is responsible for the implementation and enforcement of city and state codes relating to the construction, remodeling, alteration, repair and demolition of buildings and structures located within the city to ensure that building and structures are built to minimum standards to safeguard public welfare.

The Building Inspector inspects less complex buildings and structures, such as residential buildings, in all phases of construction, alteration, and repair for compliance to City codes and applicable state laws, as well as adherence to plans, specifications and safety regulations. The Building Inspector inspects and evaluates all types of building construction to ensure compliance with building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and other building related codes; enforces zoning and property maintenance requirements and ensures compliance with special permit requirements.
