SUMMARY:
College Interns at Martin-Harris will be exposed to many different facets of the business that will allow them to gain a better understanding of the Construction Industry, and our role as a General Contractor. Interns will be placed primarily with a team in Operations to become involved in their projects and will have the opportunity to participate and interact with other departments such as Safety, Preconstruction, Estimating, Business Development, and Warranty to further understand the many career paths we offer while becoming immersed in our best-in-class culture.
POTENTIAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES WITHIN OPERATIONS:
- Working professionally with the Project Manager, Owners, Architects, Government Agencies, Subcontractors and others involved in their assigned projects.
- Completion of all requirements to start up, track progress and close out of projects.
- Weekly updates and distribution of cost and labor unit reports.
- Obtain required permits for each project.
- Review contract documents, Plan Reading
- Review of shop drawings, preparation of submittals and tracking.
- Ensure coordination among various scopes of work via Request for Information.
- Attend OAC Meetings and make Site Visits
- Review construction schedule
- Perform quantity take offs, prepare estimates, and review/analyze change order requests.
- Help prepare bids, perform scope analysis, create and issue subcontracts.
- Help coordinate the project schedule with the Superintendent.
- Help process subcontractor pay requests & Owner Billings
- Help in the close out process, including Owner training, Operation Maintenance Manuals, As-builts, permits, etc.
- Manage and track punch list completion with the Superintendent.
- Mentor and contribute to the team and other MHC associates to be successful.
- Interviewing other Associates to understand their roles within the company.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
POTENTIAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES WITHIN OTHER DEPARTMENTS:
- Safety:
- Witness Field Safety Inspections
- Attend a Safety Orientation and Safety Meeting
- Understand Incident/Injury Protocols
- Help with other safety tasks such as: OSHA Logs, tracking OSHA Cards, updating Inventory of PPE, among others.
- Field Operations:
- Shadow a Superintendent
- Participate in scheduling inspections or witness a project inspection.
- Help Superintendent with housekeeping and tracking of time cards.
- Assist or work alongside a Laborer or Carpenter.
- Procurement (Buisness Development, Estimating, Preconstruction):
- Attend a pre-bid job walk and/or a constructability review meeting,
- Participate in a Bid Day
- Attend a Business Development event
- Successfully plan an event with given instructions and budget.
- Similar tasks to those from Operations may be assigned.
- Miscellaneous:
- Spend a day with the VDC Coordinator learning about BIM modeling and Matterports.
- Spend a day with the Scheduler learning about schedule theory and composition.
- Spend a day with the Equipment Department learning about inventory and dispatch.
- Spend a day with Warranty and participate in a warranty investigation.
- Attend or participate in a recruiting event.
- Spend a day assisting Accounting.
- Spend an afternoon with the company President, Guy Martin.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be a minimum of 16 years of age
- Must be eligible to work in the United States and provide two (2) forms of identification to include: Drivers License, Social Security Card, Passport, or Original Birth Certificate
- Must have good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
- Must have good computer skills; experience with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook
- Working toward a degree in construction management or a related field preferred
- Must be team-oriented and focused on inter-departmental partnering
