Position Purpose
The CNC Operator I produces finished parts and surfaces to specification from sheets of raw material including, but not limited to, wood, plastic, and aluminum by utilizing various brands of CNC routers. This position requires the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment that has changing demands throughout the course of the shift, so flexibility is essential.
Essential Responsibilities / Accountabilities
- Read and interpret blueprints and diagrams with limited assistance from others in department.
Identify, locate, and build all required tooling for production. - Set up CNC routers based upon input from programmers and others within department.
- Evaluate the quality of materials, parts, and equipment before the manufacturing process is started.
- Report any concerns to management before continuing with project.
- Transfer sheet goods onto in-feed tables, router tables, and out-feed tables.
- Operate assigned machines based upon predetermined input by CNC programmers and/or higher-level machinists.
- Load and unload machine tools once setup has been proven out.
- Perform tool offsets.
- Perform post processing work during CNC cycle time.
- Utilize ERP for tracking purposes.
- Conduct quality check at assignment completion. Report any concerns to management.
- Delivered finished parts to designated areas.
- Monitor tools for breakage and tool wear symptoms.
- Perform basic/routine tool and machine maintenance.
- Perform tasks to company standards to efficiently and effectively meet department goals.
- Take initiative to improve methodology and find solutions to boost productivity.
- Communicate with management.
- Able to change priorities, per leader, as they revised throughout a shift.
- Complete allocated work in a timely manner in the appropriate sequence.
- Keep a clean, organized, and safe workspace, including tools and equipment.
- Accurately capture all labor hours and material in Epicor.
- Adhere to all company safety policies and procedures.
- Attend meetings, seminars, and training sessions as required. Engage in training/development programs to enhance skills.
- Perform assigned duties according to the policies and expectations prescribed by the company.

Behavorial Competencies
- Machine Operation: Proficiency in operating CNC machinery, including loading and unloading materials, starting and stopping programs, and monitoring the machining process.
- Basic Programming: Familiarity with basic CNC programming and the ability to make simple program edits or adjustments as needed.
- Tooling Knowledge: Understanding of tooling selection, setup, and maintenance for CNC machines.
- Material Handling: Skill in handling and positioning materials correctly within the CNC machine to ensure accurate machining.
- Quality Inspection: Conducting basic quality inspections and measurements of machined parts to ensure they meet specifications.
- Safety Compliance: Strict adherence to safety protocols and guidelines to maintain a safe working environment.
- Maintenance Awareness: Basic knowledge of machine maintenance, including routine cleaning, lubrication, and reporting any issues to maintenance personnel.
- Documentation: Keeping records of machine operation, material usage, and production output.
- Communication: Effective communication with team members and supervisors to report progress and any issues or challenges encountered during machining.
- Problem-Solving: Ability to identify and address common issues that may arise during CNC machining, such as tool wear or programming errors.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma, GED, or trade school graduate, or 0-3 years of practical experience in machining, mechanics, construction, or manufacturing, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Basic knowledge of G-code and M-code.
- Basic level knowledge and experience of CNC routers a plus.
- Mechanical aptitude.
- Math proficiency.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and diagrams.
- Knowledge and experience using precision measuring instruments a plus.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Experience using MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) a plus.
- Knowledge of Epicor, Slack, and/or Box a plus.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Capacity to work independently, and as a member of a small team.
- Ability to handle changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Flexibility with work schedule. Normal work schedule is forty hours per week; however operational demands may necessitate other schedules to meet business needs.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is required to frequently walk, bend, climb, push, pull, twist, squat, stoop, and kneel each day. Specific requirements are:
- Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to lift or move 50 lbs.
- Must be able to carry 50 lbs.
- Must be able to pull or push 50 lbs.
- Must be able to reach overhead.
Work conditions of the role are:
- Work conditions may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements such as dirt, dust, fumes, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
- Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks which require following basic safety precautions.
- Must be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work within or visit areas where required. This includes, safety glasses, reflective vest, ear plugs, safety toed shoes, and other PPE as required by the location.
