Rivers Health is seeking a Full-time Clinical Laboratory Extern. JOB SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager, Shift Supervisor, or authorized designee, and pursuant to Federal Regulations, clinical oversight by the Medical Director or appointed Pathologist, performs a variety of duties, including but not limited to routine clerical functions, performs computer entry of physician orders, screens phone calls for test information, data entry and retrieval of patient's results, helps support the Laboratory computer system to ensure efficient operation of the Laboratory work flow. Performs laboratory tests in one or more of the fields of hematology, urinalysis, coagulation, biochemistry, microbiology, serology, and immunohematology in order to obtain data for use by the physician in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Performs and monitors daily quality control and instrument maintenance. Observes laboratory safety regulations. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job. The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below; and specific functions may change from time to time. * * Performs only CLIA waived or Moderate Complexity Testing * Release patient results, including critical or alerts, after successful 30 day training period * Prepares specimens for analysis to include mixing, centrifuging, measuring, filtering, and diluting. * Calibrates instruments using appropriate standards. * Performs and documents scheduled instrument maintenance. * Prepares and evaluates new reagents and/or kits using quality control material and documentation. * Performs quality control, documenting corrective action for out-of-limits results. * Prepares and studies properly labeled slides for microscopic analysis. * Retains specimens and/or slides according to protocol. * Observes safe work practices as dictated by OSHA standards. * Demonstrates ability to accurately perform testing on all instruments, performing manual testing when applicable. * Demonstrates ability to identify basic instrument/testing problems and performs troubleshooting with documentation * Reports on the job as scheduled-attendance and punctuality. * Processes specimens, performs and reports testing according to SOPs. * Checks pending lists for missed specimens adequately, follows through on tests left from previous shift and communicates incompletes assignments to the next shift. * Demonstrates knowledge of Procedure & Operator’s Manual using check-off list. * Keeps Supervisor or authorized designee advised of any/all incidents or problems that occur involving phlebotomists/IPSCs , clerical support clerks, or ancillary staff and laboratory computer system errors. * Communicates to Supervisor or designee in a timely fashion regarding any necessary absence. * Assesses workload and takes appropriate time break or lunch as needed. * Answers phones providing service information/solves issues regarding laboratory testing/documents actions taken regarding notification of report information. * Performs verification/distribution of ancillary, referral, phlebotomist or lab assistant collected specimens according to priority of specimen. * Works with Hospital Information Systems and laboratory employees to maintain efficient work flow operation of the laboratory when computer problems occur. * Organizes workload (order/collection/verification) of specimens to meet established turnaround times of testing. * Labels specimens properly, distribute to appropriate areas for testing, makes duplicate test corrections. * Recognizes unacceptable specimen/container and takes corrective action or contacts department personnel on questionable specimens prior to processing in a timely manner. * Recognizes questionable orders or requests for patient testing and contacts the appropriate technical or supervisory staff for clarification and instruction. * Assures the appropriate precautions are taken to ensure the proper protection of self and patient following Infection control regulations. * Protects patient confidentiality by following the Medical Center Ethics-Confidentiality and Privileged Information Act (HIPPA). * Shows Accountability in quality of work: assessed by the quality of the specimens collected in an appropriate amount of time to get the job done. * Wears gloves during phlebotomy/specimen distribution, wears additional protection (PPE) when necessary. * Answers telephone calls for all clinical lab departments in a timely manner and handles telephone information requests with courtesy, accuracy and respect for confidentiality. Routes calls as needed. * Follows established Medical Center and laboratory guidelines for personal phone use. * Recognizes and performs duties which need to be performed although not directly assigned; regularly helps others. * Completes assigned duties in a timely manner, allowing time to assist with other members and/or other assigned or non-assigned duties. * Takes advantage of opportunities presented in gaining knowledge that foster development or acceptance of new ideas and concepts. * Accepts and performs new procedures with an average amount of supervision and performs such procedures with little difficulty after training. * Interacts with staff, physicians, nurses, and ancillary staff in a positive manner. * Suggests ways and means for improvement. * Open to new ideas and approaches as a result of changing health-care environment. * Attends Departmental meetings monthly or as scheduled. * Retrieves patient information from microfiche, technical inquiry, or other means when needed for physicians/office and processes according to policy. * Performs routine clerical functions of order entry, maintaining equipment/supplies utilized in the area. * Has less than 2 Quality Assurances/Incident Reports filed per year, regarding specimen collection/verification affecting treatment of patient. * Performs other duties as required or assigned. * Reports on the job as scheduled. * Follows all standard safety precautions. * Follows the standards of conduct and policies and procedures of Cabell Huntington Hospital and applicable laws and regulations and reports violations through the appropriate chain of command. * Annually completes required competency assessments. * Utilize appropriate measures to promote and maintain patient safety. * Demonstrates knowledge of on-going unit specific performance improvement activities. EDUCATION AND FORMAL TRAINING: High School diploma or equivalent with classes in advanced sciences (Chemistry, Physics and Biology II); or Must have a current clinical Laboratory Trainee Licensure. Enrollment in certified Medical Technology program or meeting regulatory requirements necessary to sit for a registry exam WORK EXPERIENCE: Basic computer skills (including typing/keyboarding/using a mouse) required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: Must be able to perform vein and/or (capillary) punctures. Must be able to read and understand laboratory instruction manuals. Must demonstrate the ability to identify and address the special needs of the ages of patients including neonates, adolescents, pediatrics, and geriatrics and can effectively communicate with the patient. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able see and understand test instruments and results, and have manual dexterity to handle test equipment, collect specimens and be able to communicate to the patient’s pertinent information concerning the collection of the specimen and test procedures.
