Tazewell County (population 131,400) is located in Central Illinois along the Illinois River with a quality environment and a rich history. The Highway Department has 19 full-time employees who are responsible for the maintenance of 204 miles of county highway and 794 miles of township roads with associated drainage structures as well as 185 bridges.
The Civil Engineer Technician position, being under the direction of the County Engineer and Assistant County Engineer, performs moderately difficult professional civil engineering duties in connection with the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of public improvement projects. The Civil Engineer Technician ensures sound engineering practices and compliance with County, State, and Federal codes, standards, and ordinances.
SALARY RANGE: Commensurate with Experience, $27.66 to $41.37 per hour
HOURS OF WORK: 40 Hours/Week but depends on work activity
KEY RESPONSIBILTIES
- Perform survey work and data collection as assigned.
- Assists engineers with layout, construction, inspection, material testing, and documentation for highway construction projects including as-built quantities and material certifications.
- Performs design and construction management of projects including roadways, bridge and culvert replacement, various transportation-related projects and issues.
- Provides technical assistance preparing engineering reports and cost estimates for bidding.
- Under supervision, prepares CADD drawings for presentations and construction programs.
- Assists with the design and specifications on Highway projects.
- Writes, evaluates and analyzes specifications, construction practices, and special provisions to ensure compliance with the established guidelines.
- Works on miscellaneous projects and special assignments at the direction of the Assistant County Engineer or the County Engineer.
- Assists engineers in the regular inspection of in-service bridges and box culverts in accordance with FHWA and IDOT guidelines.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required in accordance with county policies and procedures.
- Regular attendance is required, and overtime as needed/scheduled.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND TRAINING
- Associate degree in Civil Engineering or other related field from a technical program or an accredited college and at least two (2) years construction, field, surveying experience OR the equivalent combination of education and experience
- Valid State of Illinois Class D or higher driver's license with a safe driving record required
- Working knowledge of CADD, GPS systems, engineering and survey devices, instruments, testing and sampling equipment preferred
