Overview:
Department Summary:
Substation Engineering provides multi-discipline engineering design & leadership for high voltage electric distribution projects at or relating to company owned/operated electric substations across the Company service territory of Michigan’s lower peninsula. The focus of the team is perform in-house design and consultant-designs for new substations as well as repairs, upgrades and other evolutions related to existing substations. The team has a wide focus on structural and civil designs as well as project development, spill compliance, permitting, code compliance, geotechnical, analysis, standard development, procurement support, construction support, and project support. This individual will reside in the civil engineering group and support capital projects.
Role Summary:
The Sr. Civil Engineer will be involved in several projects and to varying degrees of involvement. The role will be to
- Identify/scope the civil engineering design and construction scope necessary to complete the project
- Contract & collaborate engineering services necessary to complete the scope
- Provide engineering review and technical leadership/authority
- Collaborate with the Project Manager and Project Engineer with procurement, contracting construction services, and other project steps to complete the scope of work
- Complete closeout activities (record drawings, test records, etc.).
The Sr. Civil Engineer must be able to tolerate a heavy industrial environment. Site conditions include uneven ground of undeveloped wood sites, rough terrains of active civil construction, and rocky/ballast rock surfaces. Safety is paramount: environments include working in electric substations and around unguarded live electrical equipment.
The Sr. Civil Engineer will be required to travel to construction projects on average 1 day per week and as much as 5 days a week. Typical reasons for site visits include: pre-engineering kick off, pre-construction reviews, construction milestones, technical problem solving for construction, construction quality inspections, requested regular site visits, and red-line walk downs.
Skills:
- Working knowledge in civil/structural design. Relevant topics could include site design, stormwater management, pre-engineered metal building design, foundation design, structural steel design, environmental permitting (wetlands, soil erosion, culverts, etc.). Design experience in multiple of the above topics is preferred.
- Experience coordinating and developing contract documents, specifically engineering drawings and technical specifications for both consulting and construction services
- Working knowledge of Civil/Structural codes, including, but not limited to: NESC, NEC, ASCE MOP 113, ASCE 7, IBC/MBC, AISC Steel Construction Manual, ACI 318, and AWS D1.1.
- Software experience with RISA, L-Pile, Civil3D, Microstation, ProjectWise, SAP

- Bachelor’s Engineering degree from an ABET accredited program; ideally in Civil / Structural Engineering
