The New York Public Library is seeking a bright, dynamic, and enthusiastic Supervising Librarian to provide leadership and direction to a team of public service professionals at the Bronx Library Center. With over 700,000 patron visits per year, the Center offers a comprehensive service to all those who live, work and study in the vibrant Fordham neighborhood by offering patrons access to a wide range of books, information and knowledge.
The Bronx Library Center is open to the public Monday – Thursday 9am-9pm and Friday-Saturday 10am to 8pm. The Center houses dedicated departments (collections, services) for the following: Adult, Reference, Children and a Teen Center. Additionally, the Bronx Library Center has:
- A Career Education & Information Service where job seekers can get assistance
- The largest Adult Learning Center in the New York Public Library where adults learn to write and non-English speakers learn English
- A computer lab where a myriad of free computer classes are held each month
- Bridge-Up Hub
- A 150-seat auditorium where cultural/literary presentations are held every Saturday
- Multiple conference rooms
We are currently seeking a Children’s Supervising Librarian who is responsible for the overall administration of the Children Services Department at the Bronx Library Center, including public service, community outreach, program planning, collection development, and the supervision, training and evaluation of staff.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Managing Librarian at Bronx Library Center, the Supervising Librarian:

- Supervises all aspects of service within the Children’s Services Department
- Supervises and trains staff in all aspects of Children’s Services
- Resolves patron complaints and staff performance issues
- Provides reference services and resource recommendations using print, media and digital resources
- Conducts outreach to and develops partnerships with community-based organizations and community groups that target adults to promote the library’s services, collections, and specialized programs
- Develops and maintains content for social media platforms such as Library blogs, Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr
- Develops and maintains the layout and appearance of the adult space ensuring a safe and inviting area filled with relevant resources
- Mentors library staff in preparing and presenting children’s programs
- Assists with circulation, fines & fees management, reserves and opening/closing procedures
- May take responsibility for the facility, staff and operations in the absence of the Library Manager
- Maintains a working knowledge of trends in adult literature, and the profession through webinars, meetings, internal training, conferences, professional literature and organizational memberships

Required Education, Experience & Skills

- ALA accredited Master’s degree in Library and Information Studies
- Public Librarian’s Professional Certificate issued by the State of New York
Required Skills
- Strong commitment to public service and the ability to work well with a diverse patronage
- Experience creating and conducting a variety of innovative programs for Children and their parents/caregivers
- Knowledge and appreciation of children’s literature, audiovisual materials, computer resources, and other materials that constitute a balanced, relevant youth collection
- Experience developing, maintaining and marketing Children’s collections
- Experience building partnerships with local organizations and schools to better meet the needs of community users
- Demonstrated interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
- Successfully demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
- Strong organization and planning skills, including the ability to perform multiple projects or tasks simultaneously
- Strong computer and other related technology skills, including MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Google applications, PCs, Macs and e-reader devices
- Demonstrated knowledge of computer services including online searching, social media and reference resources and databases
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of emerging library technologies, service and programming trends for adults in urban public libraries preferred
