Front Steps is an established innovative non-profit permanent supportive housing program and community mental health center in need of someone to partner with the CEO to achieve the goals of the organization by managing its operations. The Chief Operating Officer (COO) will have strong leadership skills and the ability to approach the business side of the organization with a creative point of view. The COO will ensure that operations are efficient, productive, and effective. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in behavioral healthcare, affordable housing, and homelessness.

Reporting to the CEO and serving as an integral member of the management team, the Chief Operating Officer will be responsible for the expansion of Front Steps’ behavioral healthcare programs and accountable for the design and management of policies, processes, and operations that support the organization’s strategic goals. The successful candidate will oversee operational and support functions and collaborate closely with the CEO and senior staff to ensure consistency of processes and operations across the organization.
How you will succeed:
- Collaborate with the CEO in setting and driving the organizational vision, operations strategy, and hiring.
- Expand the organization's behavioral healthcare programs.
- Collaborate with the external partners and leadership team to co-create grant proposals as needed.
- Translate strategy into actionable steps for growth, implementing organization-wide goal setting, performance management, and annual operations planning.
- Oversee Front Steps’ day-to-day operations and employee productivity, building a highly inclusive culture that ensures that team members can thrive and that organizational goals are met.
- Create effective recruiting, onboarding, professional development, performance management, and retention processes.
- Ensure compliance with national, statewide, and local standards of organizations including but not limited to CARF, OMHAS, and the ADAMHS Board of Cuyahoga County.
Experience and Attributes:
The Chief Operating Officer will use collaborative leadership skills, possess the ability to lead and build teams, and will lead with integrity. The position requires an individual who is organized and able to create a structure that equips others to thrive while also being skilled in supporting operations and culture. The COO also must have the ability to interact with residents of St. Joseph’s Commons - permanent supportive housing, as needed, to assist in basic troubleshooting.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
- Extensive knowledge of the principles, procedures, and best practices in the industry.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
Education and Experience:
- Master’s degree in business administration, Public Affairs and Administration, or another industry-related field required; MBA preferred.
- At least 10 years of industry-related experience including three years in upper management required.

Working Conditions:
- While hours of operation are generally standard, flexibility to work evenings and extended hours may be required.
- Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office/clinical work environment.
- Requires periods of sitting, standing, telephone, and computer work.
- Hearing: adequate to hear clients or patients in person, over the telephone, or through virtual technology.
- Speaking: adequate to speak to clients or patients in person, over the telephone, or through virtual technology.
- Vision: Visual acuity adequate to perform job duties, including reading information from printed sources and computer screens.
- Physical effort required: occasional lifting and carrying of items weighing up to 15 pounds, unassisted.
- Possible exposure to blood-borne pathogens while performing job duties.
- Frequent bending, reaching, and repetitive hand movements, standing, walking, squatting, and sitting, with some lifting, pushing, and pulling exerted regularly throughout a regular workday.
- Sufficient dexterity to operate a PC and other office equipment.
