General Overview
The Mass General Brigham Chief Operating Officer (COO) has broad responsibility for all clinical operations across the system, which comprises two academic medical centers (AMCs), seven community hospitals, three specialty hospitals, and three large physicians organizations. The COO role is focused on improving operations across the system and achieving clinical integration to provide higher quality, more accessible care to our patients and improved experiences to our clinicians. The Chief of Staff to the COO plays a pivotal role, ensuring that cross-functional alignment, operational efficiency, and strategic execution are achieved at all levels of the organization. This role serves as a critical advisor and thought partner to the COO, managing priorities, streamlining workflows, and improving collaboration across departments. The Chief of Staff will ensure that cross-functional initiatives are prioritized and are executed efficiently and effectively. Working directly with senior MGB communications leaders, the Chief of Staff ensures that communications from the COO and to broad parts of the organization are aligned with the organization’s strategy and goals, consistent, and properly planned and executed.
As an extension of the COO, this role is inherently flexible, taking a central role in initiatives that are of top priority. The Chief of Staff serves as the trusted voice to help the COO determine, articulate, and execute operational strategies. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced, high-impact, dynamic environment and in proactively identifying, and then moving quickly to action, on numerous key opportunities and deliverables simultaneously. The Chief of Staff works as a partner to the COO in support of many initiatives ranging from organizational design, key talent recruitments, talent assessment, goal setting and measurement, annual performance reviews, and oversight of key operational areas, and also works independently, identifying and overseeing key programs and initiatives, problem-solving, and anticipating and mitigating potential issues.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities
- Anticipate, manage preparation for, and facilitate COO meetings. Ensure COO is prepared for all meetings and presentations, both internally and externally. This includes pre-meetings to prepare individuals for meetings with the COO or presentations to senior OCOO committees.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to the COO, providing confidential input and advice.
- Serve as a thought partner to the COO across all topics related to the MGB operations, from strategic vision and organizational design through day-to-day management and meeting structure. Anticipate and identify issues that warrant COO attention or intervention, including researching, analyzing data, planning, and recommending responses or mitigations.
- Oversee the planning, execution, and monitoring of major initiatives across the organization, ensuring they are delivered on time and within scope.
- Oversee the annual goal setting process for senior leaders reporting to the COO and the quarterly progress reporting on goals. Manage the annual review process for senior leaders and work closely with Human Resources experts to review base and incentive compensation as needed. Advise leaders collectively and individually on formation of their goals, helping them to determine metrics and align with system goals.
- Serve as a liaison between the COO and the OCOO leadership team, as well as to other senior MGB executives, and external stakeholders, to facilitate communication and collaboration.
- Prepare communication material and presentations on behalf of the COO to ensure consistent, strategic and effective materials.
- Manage incoming requests for COO involvement, engagement, or activities to prioritize and recommend appropriate responses and actions.
- Perform site and program visits and reviews with the COO and other senior staff to support the operating entities and teams and their execution against objectives.
- Creatively design solutions for various issues that arise related to external relationships, cross-functional activities, personnel issues, interdepartmental cooperation, and financial performance and reporting.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration,or related field, or JD with healthcare experience preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree acceptable with combination of training and 10+ years of related experience.
- 7+ years professional experience in strategic planning, consulting, transformation, and/or operational leadership roles related to healthcare.
- Exceptional collaborator and communicator, with strong executive presence; ability to communicate effectively and efficiently (both verbal and written) at multiple levels of a large, complex organization. Works well with spans of leadership from board chairs and members, through senior executives, academic leaders, clinicians, and managers.
- Leads through influence, able to motivate disparate groups to work together to common solutions.
- Independent thinker, planner, originator able to develop solutions through research and analysis, present options with supporting arguments, and implement decisions.
- Confident in providing advice, opinions, and counterpoint to senior leaders individually or in group settings.
- Exceptionally organized with excellent attention to detail and anticipatory planning.
- Strong knowledge of healthcare operations, economics, and industry trends.
- Exceptional leadership, communication and interpersonal skills, able to build and maintain trust and confidence.

Work environment
- Full-time on site 5 days a week working with senior most executives. Location is predominantly in modern office setting in Back Bay area of Boston. Works with teams of executives and clinical leaders with support staff.
- Some site visits to MGB hospitals and clinics in the Boston Metro area, on Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, in Western Massachusetts, and Southern New Hampshire.
