The City of Matthews is seeking to hire an experienced chief of police. We are a town of 600 residents
The chief of police is an appointed position by the city council and reports to the mayor. The chief of police oversees 4 police officers, police services include law enforcement, criminal investigations, community relations, city patrol, traffic control, evidence, records, preventing crime, and animal control. The chief has the assistance of his staff to delegate and maintain duties.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The chief of police oversees 4 police officers, police services include law enforcement, criminal investigations, community relations, city patrol, traffic control, evidence, records, preventing crime, and animal control. The chief has the assistance of his staff to delegate and maintain duties.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Leadership.
- Supervise and manage a team of law enforcement officers by providing guidance and support for success.
- Provide crisis management and emergency services.
- Implement policies and procedures to maintain safety and prevent crime
- Manage a budget and resources to ensure operation of the department.
- Coordinate and oversee with other local law enforcement departments to work and have an effective approach to law enforcement.
- Ensure all personnel are trained in the latest law enforcement practices and education.
- Patrol
- Officers patrol by car.
- Respond to calls
- Officers respond to emergency and non-emergency calls, including accidents, domestic disputes, and reported violations.
- Enforce laws
- Officers enforce laws, make arrests, and issue citations for traffic or other violations.
- Provide service
- Officers interact with citizens to provide assistance and service.
- Prepare reports
- Officers prepare and complete reports, records, and other paperwork documenting incidents.
- Conduct investigations
- Officers conduct investigations, interview witnesses, suspects, and complainants, and testify in court.
- Maintain peace and security
- Officers maintain peace and security, and may protect parks, public transportation, and local rivers and lakes.
- Provide traffic assistance
- Officers provide traffic assistance and may direct traffic or control crowds.
- Serve warrants
- Officers serve warrants.
- Appearing in Court
- Appearing in court to present evidence and testimony. Bailiff duties one Tuesday a month.
Experience:
- A minimum of 10 years of experience in law enforcement, including leadership.
- Possess a valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
- Be certified in CPR and first aid.
- Have experience with animal handling and care.
- Possess a Certificate in Law Enforcement or a related field.
- Have experience with surveillance and loss prevention.
- Knowledge of immigration law and procedures.
- Have a strong understanding of law enforcement practices and procedures.
- Be able to effectively communicate with the public and other stakeholders.
- Excellent leadership and management skills.
- Be able to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
- Be able to lift and carry equipment and supplies.

Education:
- High school or equivalent. (Required)
- Missouri P.O.S.T. Class A. (Required, City will not provide)
License/Certification:
- Driver's License. (Required)
