Chief of Police
The City of Canton is seeking a motivated individual with previous Law Enforcement background. Canton is a city in McPherson County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 685. EOE. Position open until filled. E-mail resume to cantoncity@hometelco.net
Functions
· Enforce Federal, State, and local laws and ordinances
· Daily contact with the general public, subordinate personnel, and occasional contact with City Council, City Attorney, and Municipal Judge
· Maintain communication with Mayor, City Council, City Attorney, and Municipal Judge
· Investigate crimes, interview witnesses, suspects, and victims. Follow-up investigations and gathering evidence
· Perform public relations
· Assist other Law Enforcement agencies and Fire/EMS as necessary
· Animal Control and dog kennel functions
· Operate and maintain law enforcement equipment i.e. patrol vehicle, radio, firearms, radar, computers, etc.
· Responsible for department resources and equipment, limited authority to purchase necessary department supplies, participate in the annual budget process
· Municipal Court with occasional transport of inmates
· Serves warrants and subpoenas
· Other duties as necessary or assigned
Requirements
· Previous experience in Law Enforcement required. Supervisory experience preferred
· High School Diploma/GED, graduation from Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center, valid Kansas Driver’s License, firearms certification for pistols, shotguns, and rifles, and Police Radar certification
· Knowledge of Federal, State, and local laws and ordinances
· Ability to efficiently operate patrol vehicles, firearms, computers, radios, radar, and other law enforcement equipment
· Ability to concentrate on tasks in the presence of distractions, understand and anticipate problems, read and interpret maps, manuals, legal documents, reports, and written instructions
· Problems solving and critical thinking is a must
· Independent decision making about prioritizing assignments, personnel issues, and citizens complaints
Physical Requirements
· Ability to pass and maintain all physical activities and requirements of Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center is required
Working Conditions
· Exposure to hazardous chemicals, explosives, heights, excessive noise, and all types of weather conditions
· Elements of risk to personal safety
· Exposure to blood borne pathogens
· Physical and mental demands may change dramatically within a very short time period. Subject to eyestrain. Involves contact with dangerous persons, exposure to hazardous material, narcotics, exposure to noise, and noxious odors.
· Schedule flexibility with the need to work day/evening/night/weekend/holiday hours
Supervision
· Chief of Police is responsible for supervising and scheduling part-time Officers
