The Chief Nursing Officer is responsible for the strategy and systems designed to ensure patient- focused nursing care of the highest quality and in line with the mission, vision and values of Exeter Hospital. Central to this responsibility is the promotion and enhancement of high-quality nursing practice that is supported through the ongoing professional development for the department of nursing. Reports directly to the President and is a member of the Executive Team together with the Chief Operating Officer, the Chief Financial Officer, the Chief Medical Officer and Human Resources Leader. Provides executive leadership in all matters pertaining to Nursing Practice and Nursing Administration and ensures that these components of the healthcare delivery process contribute to the strategic and operational goals of Exeter Hospital. Key accountabilities include planning, quality outcomes, cost management, as well as managing and promoting relationships between nursing and its multiple customers and stakeholders – both internal and external to the organization. Responsibilities comprise three principal areas:
Nursing Practice: Directly responsible for nursing practice throughout all service lines at Exeter Hospital to include the emergency department, inpatient nursing, cancer center, ambulatory nursing practice, DNV accreditation/compliance, magnet designation program, and other clinical support services and nursing professional development.
Nursing Administration: Directs the delivery of systems and programs designed to promote the efficient and effective delivery of nursing care in a magnet designated hospital. Serve as a mentor and a resource to both the Associate Chiefs and to the nurse managers who participate on the various service line teams.
Executive Leadership: Serves at the executive level in the hospital and assumes an active leadership role with the hospital's governing body, senior leadership, medical staff, management and other clinical leaders in the hospital's decision-making structure. Actively promotes and participates in a dyadic structure to ensure inter-disciplinary, team-based care for all patients. Job Description:
Primary Responsibilities:
+ Ensures the highest professional standards for the nursing service. Establishes guidelines for the delivery of nursing care, treatment and services and provides oversight for nursing policy and procedure approval.
+ Develop cultural competencies and sensitivity to understand and relate to a diverse patient population and workforce.
+ Provide leadership and guidance in conceptualizing and implementing a philosophy of nursing in line with our magnet accreditation, which advances the discipline of nursing, facilitates the design/redesign of patient care delivery, builds relationships among constituents both within and outside the nursing division, and promotes education, information sharing, and professional development.
+ Promote and support the value of nursing education and research; including the provision of formal mentorship and development to all levels of nursing division.
+ Ensures effectiveness of nursing staffing plans and represents Exeter Hospital nursing to external professional organizations and establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with area schools of nursing.
+ Ensures hiring of a diverse and talented workforce. Responsible for ensuring timely and constructive feedback to all employees through ongoing mentoring, and timely completion of annual performance evaluations. Ensures a safe and supportive workplace through leadership in initiatives to prevent employee injuries and other employee safety and support initiatives.
+ Lead the team of nursing leaders by providing direction, encouraging close collaboration both with the department of nursing and across service lines and departments, and delegating as appropriate to ensure that the strategy, goals and objectives of Nursing are aligned with those of Exeter Hospital and those of the larger BILH system.
+ Work collaboratively with the Department of Quality/Safety and disease center leaders in the development, implementation, measurement and reporting of quality improvement projects
+ Works with department directors and managers to meet organizational financial goals, and implements mid-course adjustments as needed based on changes in volume, productivity metrics, reimbursement expectations or other healthcare environment or economic changes.
+ Provides leadership for ongoing improvement in clinical quality and patient safety, including but not limited to implementation of National Patient Safety Standards. Remains current on developing trends in quality improvement and patient safety and implements clinical best practices.
+ Is skilled in application of tools for process improvement application of tools for process improvement including but not limited to LEAN engineering principles and ensures the development of those skills by department directors and managers. Is accountable for ensuring a high-quality patient and family centered care experience.
+ Ensures continuous compliance with all regulatory bodies, including DNV, CMS and Department of Public Health.
+ Has the responsibility to lead and support managers and directors in developing and improving operations to create optimal performance levels, leveraging our Framework for Excellence model of psychological safety, accountability, improvement/measurement, teamwork and communication, negotiation and transparency
Required Qualifications:
+ Master's degree in Nursing, Business Administration, Healthcare Finance or Hospital Administration required. Doctoral Degree Preferred. (DNP or PhD)
+ Licensed Registered Nurse required.
+ 10+ years supervisory/management experience required
+ High level comprehension of Finance and Accounting and the ability to manage both capital and operating budgets of a complex nature.
+ Experience with computer systems required, including web-based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, TEAMS, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.
