Community Initiatives is an Oakland based nonprofit organization providing more than 110 different nonprofit clients with fiscal sponsorship, including tax-exemption, accounting and financial oversight, risk management and insurance, legal compliance, grants management, and human resource services. Our fiscally sponsored projects (FSPs) represent various nonprofit sectors––arts and culture, education, environment, health, human services, and public affairs.
Summary:
Reporting to and partnering with the CEO, the CFO will play a critical role in developing financial plans, overseeing all fiscal and fiduciary responsibilities for the organization and its fiscally sponsored projects in conjunction with the Board of Directors and Finance and Audit Committees of the Board. The CFO plays a critical role in developing and implementing our approach to customer service, ensuring appropriate financial processes and policies are in place, and upgrading systems to operate more efficiently and transparently with our projects. The CFO manages, motivates, and mentors the Accounting/Finance Department.
Essential Job Functions:
Financial and Operational Management
· Oversees all accounts, ledgers and reporting systems, ensuring compliance with appropriate Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, regulatory and audit requirements and tax filings. Ensures internal control safeguards are in place and oversees all audit activities.
· Manages cash flow and forecasting for the organization and projects.
· Partners with CEO and Board to develop and implement multi-year strategic plans and annual plans to ensure alignment between long-term and short-term budgetary planning and cost management.
· Monitors progress against the budget and presents financial metrics both internally and externally.
· Develops and utilizes forward-looking, predictive models and activity-based financial analyses to provide insight into the organization’s operations and business plans.
· Partners with systems consultant and CEO to identify, ensure organization is ready for and implements new systems that meet the needs of the organization and projects.
· Engages the Board Finance and Audit Committees around issues, trends and budgets and cost management. Sets agendas, works with Board members and engages outside consultants appropriately.
· Participates in policy development as a member of the senior management team.
· Optimizes banking relationships to ensure strong financial and operational management.
· Represents the company to financial partners, including financial institutions, investors, foundation executives, auditors, public officials, etc.
· Remains up to date on nonprofit audit best practices and state and federal law regarding nonprofit operations and fundraising.
Team Management
· Hires, terminates, coaches and develops accounting and finance staff managing work allocation and identifying professional development opportunities. Conducts and oversees annual work planning and performance evaluations, and builds an effective team dynamic.
· Assesses current structure to ensure efficient and effective processes and procedures and cross-training for all positions.
· Works closely with other senior leaders to ensure cross-functional teamwork and delivery of excellent customer service.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in finance or business
- CPA strongly preferred
- 10 years of direct work experience in nonprofit financial management, including knowledge of GAAP and FASB accounting standards, and grant financials and reporting requirements
- Experience in a nonprofit organization with a budget of at least $100 million, familiar with fundraising rules, revenue recognition and reporting requirements
- Demonstrated success leading and managing the strategic, financial, and business operations of a rapidly growing, high-impact nonprofit organization
- Ability to serve as a strategic thought partner and engage in creative, entrepreneurial thinking as well as the ability to execute and operationalize strategies and new initiatives
- Experience translating nonprofit financial information and data into insights and strategic recommendations that are aligned with organizational vision and mission; ability to measure nonprofit financials and operational performance
- Proven track record as an impactful negotiator and relationship builder
- Advanced computer knowledge and skills in nonprofit finance and accounting systems
- Experience with risk management and insurance liability issues, and in contracting and reporting processes
- Experience leading a systems upgrade process
- Excellent people-management skills and a proven ability to mentor, motivate, and support through inclusive leadership practices and collaborative problem solving
- Demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities, proposing new ways of creating efficiencies, and guiding investment in people, systems and facilities
- High degree of integrity and dependability
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills and strong attention to detail
- Undergraduate and/or graduate focus on nonprofit finance
- Prior supervision of a team larger than 6 staff.
Physical Demands
- While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
Working for Community Initiatives
This is a full-time, exempt position that includes extensive benefits and a competitive salary commensurate with experience, $225,000-250,000/year. This position is currently working in hybrid mode with two or more days/week in our office in Oakland.
