About the Job
Egan Company is seeking candidates for a preconstruction Chief Estimator role within our Electrical Construction group! This high-impact position manages the preparation, pricing, and submission of full-scope proposals for projects in our electrical group, and assists with estimating and business development.
This Chief Estimator role offers the opportunity to further relationships with customers and serve as a trusted partner in the preconstruction process. Typical projects include plan-and-spec, design-assist, or design-build for general contractors and developers, with projects being a mix of light industrial, commercial, solar, WTP/WWTP work.
Responsibilities
The basic responsibilities of the Chief Estimator include, but are not limited to the following:

Maintain relationships and contact with GC customers.

Work to position Egan to perform upcoming projects through early discussions and budget development assistance.

Engage with the Group Manager and counterparts in other Egan groups to identify emerging project opportunities and changing market conditions or market segments in order to assist with project selection and opportunities for Egan’s multi-scope offerings.

Build strong internal partnerships; work collaboratively with other Egan groups to support Egan’s Mission, Vision, and Values.

Build strong partnerships with vendors and subcontractor partners.
-
Serve as point of contact for clients throughout the estimating process.

Schedule estimating resources and prioritize assignments.
-
Collaborate with Marketing and others on the preparation of proposal books, as necessary.

Broaden Egan’s General Contractor/client relationships by introducing prospective project team members, such as Project Managers and Field Leaders.

Gather and report client feedback regarding selection criteria and pricing, including competitor performance in relation to our own.

Lead and develop a team of Preconstruction Estimators and Preconstruction/Business Development Associates.

Ensure the Preconstruction Estimators:
-
Get sufficient sub and vendor coverage on estimates.
-
Follow up with post-bid analysis to understand how a proposal was perceived/understood.

Enter leads and customer details into Egan’s Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system; Utilize CRM to organize and track future opportunities.

Pull e-numbers and assign them to the correct profit center.

Ensure the Preconstruction/Business Development Associates:
-
Participate in business development activities.
-
Spend time with prospective and current clients to foster strong business relationships.

Ensure estimating labor is accurately allocated to E numbers.
-
Complete a bid filter for borderline projects or when opportunities are greater than resources.
-
Maximize Egan’s estimating processes; find the balance between too many and too few people involved in project pursuit; determine when shortcuts and rules of thumb are more effective than designing and counting.

Support project managers with budget breakdowns, pricing confirmations, and change order pricing as requested.

Assist with value engineering ideas and associated pricing.

Work with Project Managers and Designers to ensure a successful preconstruction process on Design Assist/Design Build projects.

Maintain and improve Accubid software and other estimating tools.

Work with the software manager to maintain a database of estimating costs and actual costs on completed projects. Develop metrics that ease feedback from completed projects into upcoming estimates.

Achieve and document positive references for completed work which may be used in Egan’s Corporate Resume, on various social media and in external newsletters, internally featured in company communications, and in future proposals.

Track bid hit rate on all projects.

Roll e-number costs to job numbers when awarded projects.

Understand market mark-up bid levels.
-
Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
-
Required: 2-year degree in a related field
-
15+ years of electrical experience, including any of the following or a combination role in: estimating, project management, pre-construction, or field experience as an electrician.
Qualifications

Strong communication skills, and ability to navigate and resolve conflict effectively.

Proven ability to develop and motivate a team; strong leadership skills; interpersonal skills; ability to motivate direct and indirect staff.

Knowledge of: design-build, design-assist, and plan and spec projects.

Demonstrated ability to estimate projects, ensure profitability, and complete successfully.

Ability to relate and partner effectively with General Contractors and outside customers.

Proficient in the use of standard office computer programs such as Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and Accubid.

Ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external customers.
-
Willingness to learn new ideas and concepts and work proactively with project stakeholders to solve problems and achieve project goals.

Ability to work effectively with all levels of internal and external customers.
-
Strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects at a time.
-
Ability to properly delegate and follow up to ensure completion of assigned tasks by staff.

Willingness to work with corporate management and other internal departments on initiatives to improve Egan processes.

Working Conditions
- Performance of duties is approximately 90% corporate office/home and 10% on job sites/customer sites. This is a hybrid role consisting of a blend of working in the office/at jobsites and remote.
