Job Summary:
The Chief Engineer is responsible for overseeing the maintenance and engineering operations of the hotel, ensuring that all equipment, systems, and facilities are functioning efficiently and safely. This role involves managing the engineering team, coordinating with other departments, and implementing preventive maintenance programs to enhance the hotel’s operational performance and guest satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
- Leadership and Supervision
- Lead, train, and supervise the engineering team, including maintenance technicians and other support staff, ensuring they perform their duties effectively and safely.
- Develop and implement maintenance procedures and protocols to ensure the efficient operation of all hotel systems and equipment.
- Conduct regular team meetings to communicate goals, provide feedback, and address any operational challenges.
- Oversee staff scheduling, ensuring adequate coverage for all shifts, including on-call rotations for emergencies.
- Maintenance and Repairs
- Oversee all maintenance activities, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, and general building repairs, ensuring that all work is completed to high standards.
- Develop and execute preventive maintenance schedules to minimize equipment downtime and extend the life of hotel assets.
- Coordinate with external contractors for specialized repairs or major projects, ensuring quality work and adherence to budget and timelines.
- Monitor and address any maintenance issues reported by guests or staff, prioritizing urgent repairs to ensure guest satisfaction.
- Facility Management
- Conduct regular inspections of the hotel’s facilities, identifying areas that require attention and implementing corrective actions as needed.
- Ensure that the hotel’s exterior, including landscaping, parking areas, and outdoor amenities, is well-maintained and visually appealing.
- Manage the operation and maintenance of the hotel’s energy systems, focusing on energy efficiency and sustainability initiatives.
- Implement and oversee the hotel’s fire safety and emergency systems, ensuring compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations.
- Budget and Inventory Management
- Develop and manage the engineering department’s budget, controlling costs while maintaining high standards of operation and safety.
- Manage the inventory of maintenance supplies, tools, and equipment, ensuring that stock levels are maintained, and reorders are placed as needed.
- Negotiate with suppliers and contractors to obtain the best prices for goods and services required by the engineering department.
- Monitor the use of resources to prevent waste and improve cost efficiency.
- Collaboration and Communication
- Work closely with other department heads, such as housekeeping and front office, to ensure seamless hotel operations and address maintenance needs.
- Communicate effectively with the General Manager regarding the status of engineering operations, including project updates, staffing, and any concerns.
- Participate in management meetings, contributing insights and recommendations to improve the hotel’s overall performance.
- Provide technical support and guidance to other departments as needed, ensuring smooth operations across the hotel.
Other duties as assigned to meet the needs of the property.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; a degree or certification in engineering, facilities management, or a related field is preferred.
- Proven experience in a maintenance or engineering management role, preferably within a hotel or hospitality environment.
- Strong technical skills in HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, and general building maintenance.
- Excellent leadership and team management skills, with a focus on training and staff development.
- Strong problem-solving and project management skills, with the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations related to building maintenance and safety.
- Physical ability to inspect facilities, perform maintenance tasks, and manage engineering activities as needed.
