About the Job
The Chief Estimator is responsible for overseeing, coordinating, and directing all estimating functions within the company. This role encompasses the development of project budgets, cost estimates, cost tracking, and providing project support across all divisions. The Chief Estimator is tasked with establishing and implementing department standards and procedures, ensuring the accuracy and completeness of final estimate packages, and maintaining the company's estimating database.
Key Responsibilities
- Department Management:
- Plan, coordinate, and manage all department activities.
- Provide regular performance feedback to staff.
- Develop team members' skills and encourage professional growth.
- Estimating Functions:
- Oversee all estimating activities and manage the preparation of estimates.
- Review bid requests and proposals for accuracy and completeness.
- Prepare and maintain a weekly bid calendar, ensuring timely and accurate estimate completion.
- Project Support:
- Prioritize and plan work activities, using time efficiently and developing realistic action plans.
- Delegate work assignments, set expectations, and monitor delegated tasks.
- Motivate team members to perform well and accept feedback from others.
- Attend job walks and report critical differences in job drawings and bid requirements to management.
- Estimate Review and Analysis:
- Prepare bid summaries and review estimates with the Estimator, Project Manager, and/or Division Manager.
- Review estimates and revisions for completeness and accuracy.
- Follow up on bid results and maintain an estimate tracking log.
- Analyze estimates versus completed projects to refine future estimates.
- Software and Training:
- Provide support for the Accubid software system and maintain the Accubid database with weekly updates.
- Develop and deliver estimating training programs for staff.
- Maintain confidentiality within the department.
- Administrative Tasks:
- File, organize, and maintain estimate files associated with all relevant tasks.
- Perform additional tasks as assigned by management.
Qualification Requirements
- Minimum of 10 years of electrical estimating experience.
- Field experience as an electrician or a degree in Construction Management preferred.
- Extensive experience using Accubid software or similar estimating systems.
- Strong conceptual estimating skills for electrical construction projects.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the electrical construction industry.
- Ability to understand all types of drawings and technical specifications.
- Knowledge of the National Electrical Code, fire alarm, and other related systems.
- Experience in supervision, coaching, and staff development.
- Strong analytical skills and a solid statistical background.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office suite.
