Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission (P.V.S.C.), a major wastewater treatment plant located in Newark, New Jersey is currently seeking an experienced Black Seal-In Charge Boiler Operator to operate and maintain boilers and auxiliary equipment used for process and heating various buildings within the PVSC Plant and Collection system.
Position Summary: The Chief Boiler Engineer is responsible for overseeing the operation and maintenance of the boilers and auxiliary equipment used in the biosolids treatment process and for building heat. This will include the supervision of all boiler operations staff, ensuring the proper operation of all equipment, and detecting and resolving any issues that may arise. Additionally, the Chief Boiler Engineer will establish and monitor work schedules to meet operational needs and will direct all activities critical to maintaining a safe and efficient work environment. Must be available 24/7/365 as questions and issues arise.
Education and Experience: A High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate is required. A minimum of ten (10) years of experience in boiler operations, with a minimum of six (6) years’ experience in a supervisory capacity, is necessary.
License and/or Certifications: A New Jersey Gold Seal Boiler License is required. Must have a valid New Jersey Driver's License.
Requirements: Must have solid knowledge of both the compliance standards associated with the operation of boilers, as well as the proper procedures used in operating, maintaining, adjusting, and regulating pumps, valves, and other mechanical equipment. Must have the ability to determine if equipment is operating properly, as well as detect and correct problems that may arise. Required to be able to give clear and concise work instructions, prepare concise and accurate reports, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff at all levels. Must have the knowledge required to ensure both the mechanical integrity of the Plant’s equipment, as well as that the overall operation of the Plant is in compliance with all regulations, which includes the Chief Engineer’s Responsibility as outlined N.J.A.C. 12:90, Boiler Pressure Vessel and Refrigeration Rules, applicable ASME, NFPA, NBIC, original equipment manufacturers (OEM) specifications, and industry accepted engineering safety practices. Must have solid knowledge of the pertinent occupational hazards and related safety precautions pertaining to the operation of boilers and related equipment. Must be capable of implementing and directing the appropriate and necessary corrective actions needed to prevent hazardous events, protect personnel and safeguard property. Must have strong verbal and written communication skills and be able to work with licensed operators and equipment owners on a daily basis.
Physical Demands: Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without a reasonable accommodation to ensure the health and safety of oneself and others is maintained. To perform the essential functions of this position the employee must be able to: sit, stand, walk, stoop, climb (including ladders), kneel, lift up to 50 lbs., carry, reach, push, pull, use a keyboard, minor use of tools, manual dexterity, hearing and visual acuity. Must qualify for and possess the ability to perform entry into Confined Spaces while wearing proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as, but not limited to, canister and dust masks, as well as Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).
Working Conditions: Workers are employed in conditions of a wastewater treatment plant and sewer collection system and will be required to work indoors and outdoors.
