Hennepin Healthcare is an integrated system of care that includes HCMC, a nationally recognized Level I Adult Trauma Center and Level I Pediatric Trauma Center and acute care hospital, as well as a clinic system with primary care clinics located in Minneapolis and across Hennepin County. SUMMARY:
We are currently seeking a Chief Administrative Officer to join our Executive Leadership team. This full-time role will work days.
Purpose of this position: Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) provides strategic leadership to achieve business objectives, integrates administrative systems and teams, and leads transformational change. The CAO will partner with the CEO, the board of trustees, and senior leadership team in crafting integrated strategies and executing enterprise initiatives to support financially sustainable advancement of the mission. They will have direct accountability for maintaining and improving administrative operations both in their vertical areas of responsibility and horizontally across the organization
Departments and areas of functional accountability include: People and Culture, Compliance and Risk Management, Information Technology, Project Management, and Data Analytics
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Champions and advances a culture that embraces change, adaptability, and continuous improvement while constantly measuring and challenging the status quo in support of advancing our mission. Partners with leadership to articulate and deliver on talent strategy with an established plan that will attract, retain, and develop the best people, delivering on current and future strategic priorities
- Represents, guides, and advances the People and Culture team in key forums as they develop strategy and deliver excellence in critical talent capabilities including: Talent Acquisition Strategy and Process, Talent Management, Total Rewards, Employee Engagement, Benefits, Payroll, Volunteers, Organizational Development and Learning, Culture, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Change Leadership / Change Management, HR Policy, Employee Relations, and Operations
- Develops and implements creative talent acquisition strategies to ensure access and sustainability of a diverse talent pipeline in a rapidly changing talent market
- Provides leadership for the Compliance and Risk Management Department. Ensures HHS has appropriate controls, audits, and operational actions in place. In conjunction with key executives, ensures administrative and clinical functions are in compliance with all regulatory standards, including federal, state, and local regulations and laws governing business functions, including reporting requirements and fiduciary responsibilities
- Identifies and quantifies enterprise risks. Works cross-functionally to address significant risks and liabilities through annual action plan prioritization. Reports to the executive leadership team and to the HHS board identified risks and related action plans
- In partnership with the Chief Information Officer, develops and deploys strategies for information services, data analysis, and technology infrastructure support. Provides structure, process, and professional project management rigor for major projects and initiatives across the organization
- Develops and maintains organizational dashboards and scorecards from the Board level through to individual teams to support continuous improvement, annual plan goals, and daily operational effectiveness. Ensuring information is visible and actionable
- Develops deep collaboration and strategic alignment for functional areas to support the operational needs of the organization
- In partnership with other Officers, establishes an environment that promotes teamwork within and across all Hennepin Healthcare System areas, identifies team and individual developmental opportunities, and encourages individual contributions to overall team effectiveness
- Selects, develops, evaluates, and mentors directors and managers
- Is responsible for the preparation, review, and management of department budgets to meet or exceed budgetary expectations
- Is responsible for the preparation, review, and management efficiency and productivity in departments to meet or exceed productivity expectations
- Provides clear expectations and standards of accountability to ensure consistency with the organizational mission, vision, and values
- Role models professional and organizational commitment and excellence
- Establishes and maintains systems to ensure compliance with all regulatory standards
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in hospital administration, business administration, public health, health care administration, or related field
- At least ten years of executive leadership experience in a healthcare setting, preferably in both an acute and ambulatory medical center, including prior experience in an academic setting

- Track record of leading process improvement, identifying and prioritizing opportunities to advance the mission, and administrative efficiency through development of processes, systems, and people
- Adept at leveraging technology to reduce risk, streamline operations, and add value to the organization
- Proven experience and successful track record in executive management – including strategy development and implementation, performance planning and management, and overall leadership of professional staff
- Demonstrated ability to manage large budgets composed of people with sought-after skills, multi-year contracts with vendors, and applications with clinical and business impact
- Excellent broad based business background with knowledge and experience in organizational development, continuous quality improvement, and business compliance requirements for each of the managed functions
- Exhibits a strong presence of command with proven ability to establish work plans, goals, and manage to those objectives
- An effective team builder and leader with a track record of integrating functions and fostering a positive work environment that motivates staff to achieve their potential
- Strategic ability to see the big picture and lead a team through change toward a common vision
- Strong project management experience
- Ability to design work processes around customer needs and expectations
