About the Job
Purpose
Intermountain Medical Center (IMED) is a 500-bed hybrid academic medical center which serves as the quaternary referral hospital for Intermountain Health. The Chief Academic Officer (CAO) for Intermountain Medical Center (IMED) will oversee key academic processes at IMED, with a focus on Faculty Development and Medical Education (ME), in addition to directing his/her own research program. Reporting directly to the IMED Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and in close collaboration with clinical leadership (Department Chairs and Senior Medical Directors), the CAO will lead and support the faculty development of all academic physicians at IMED. The CAO will also serve as the IMED leader for medical education (with matrixed reporting to the system-wide Institutional Official) and will collaborate closely with senior leadership within the Intermountain Health Office of Research. With matrixed reporting to the Intermountain VP Research, the CAO will also contribute pivotally to enhancing IMEDs robust and growing portfolio of patient-centered clinical research.
The IMED CAO will also lead efforts, in collaboration with the IMED marketing director, to publicize and disseminate IMEDs academic achievements.
The successful candidate is expected to maintain her/his own program of scholarly investigation and will have associated protected time for those endeavors; the position would in general be filled by an Associate or Full Professor. Prior experience as a Division Chief or Department Chair is desirable.
Job Essentials
Key Leadership Responsibilities (0.5 FTE)
Faculty Development
- Facilitation in and/or performance of regular check-ins with IMED academic faculty.
- Participation and/or performance of annual reviews with IMED academic faculty as well as support of appointment, retention, and promotion activities.
- Design, implementation, and oversight of academic onboarding and mentorship programs for IMED academics.
- Primary and collaborative mentorship of early- and mid-career investigators, as appropriate
- Oversight of academic integrity within IMED
- Serve as the IMED executive leadership representative in decision-making with clinical Service Line and Office of Research in hiring decisions for academic faculty
- Serve on the Appointment, Retention, and Promotion Committee for Intermountain Health
- Operate regular meetings (e.g., monthly) for IMED academic faculty
- Serve as Medical Director for certain IMED academic faculty (those who are not employed by the Intermountain Medical Group)
Medical Education leadership
- The CAO will oversee expansion of GME programs at IMED, in alignment with Intermountain Health strategic priorities
- The CAO will serve as IMEDs leader for medical education, with matrixed reporting to the System-wide Designated Institutional Official.
- The CAO will assure appropriate staffing and funding of GME leadership positions at IMED and supervise the activities of the program directors and other staff.
- The CAO will engage in strategic collaborations with Medical Education leaders to expand and support education programs and oversee their functions.
Research leadership
- Coordinate with appropriate system and hospital leadership to ensure compliance and alignment with programmatic and institutional goals for Research.
- Represent IMED executive leadership in strategic discussions with Office of Research and Clinical Service Line regarding Research program growth.
- Coordinate with Senior Medical Director - Research and program-specific Medical Directors - Research to optimize success of IMED faculty research programs.
- Primary and collaborative mentorship of early- and mid-career investigators, as appropriate
Non-administrative Responsibilities (0.5 FTE)
Patient care (approximately 0.2 FTE)
- Provision of outpatient or inpatient clinical work at IMED.
Academic effort (approximately 0.3 FTE)
- Maintain a productive individual research program that meets Intermountains academic productivity guidelines (total academic effort may increase with extramural funding).
In addition to the responsibilities listed above, IMEDs CAO is expected to uphold Intermountains mission, vision, and values by fostering an environment that reflects the mission, engaging academic physicians in efforts that support the mission, and promoting excellence in the fundamentals of extraordinary care. The CAO, in combination with his/her dyad/triad partner(s), will also provide strategic direction, leadership, and support for all relevant academic initiatives.
