JOB DESCRIPTION
Chemist I
I. OVERVIEW
The primary job function is to perform EPA-compliant chemical testing of various environmental water, wastewater, soil, and solid waste samples and ASTM-compliant testing of various industrial chemicals with detailed documentation of results. Using analytic methods, quantify the composition of product mixtures. As these activities require the knowledge base and training commensurate with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a chemistry-related major, this is a professional, salaried, full-time, day-shift position.
II. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Execute safe and effective handling and storage techniques for materials used.
2. Perform established experimental methods, following detailed instructions.
3. Prepare reports on experiments and quality control and submit documentation for approval.
4. Ensure the highest level of safety, quality and efficiency is maintained.
III. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Perform timely and accurate analysis of industrial wastewater samples and terminal chemical samples in accordance with laboratory, EPA, and ASTM procedures.
2. Demonstrate continued analytical competence by completing and documenting, with acceptable results, all required QC measurements for all analysis performed in the laboratory.
3. Read and maintain a practical knowledge and understanding of the original EPA and ASTM methods upon which the laboratory procedures are based.
4. Properly document, date, and sign all analytical work according to EPA requirements, ASTM recommendations, and laboratory procedures.
5. Recognize and immediately report analysis irregularities to supervisors. Participate in remediation as required.
6. Coordinate with other chemists in the laboratory to assure all analyses are completed in a timely and efficient manner.
7. Become knowledgeable of, and participate in, the laboratory and terminal HSSE programs.
8. Comply with OSHA and laboratory requirements for maintaining a safe work environment and execution of safe work practices. Participate actively in the compliance programs.
9. Comply with EPA and laboratory requirements for laboratory waste disposal. 10. Learn complex wet and instrumental analytical testing methods for environmental and raw material samples from written and/or verbal instruction.
11. Understand technical writing and apply gained knowledge to analytical procedures and techniques.
12. Recognize irregularities in analysis behavior due to interferences in the sample and irregularities in instrument behavior due to improper set-up or operation.
13. Accurately represent, in both written and verbal presentation, relevant observations made in the conduct of an analysis.
14. Perform basic statistical calculations, including mean, standard deviation, t-test, and linear regression, and understand their meaning and application with respect to accuracy and precision.
15. Ability to accurately enter data in LIMs systems, provide feedback for continuous improvement of databases.
16. Multitask across multiple analysis methods at different stages of completion, without error.
17. Perform occasional weekend analysis, as required.
18. Perform, on occasion, off-site collection of environmental samples.
19. Perform instrument calibration and maintenance, as required.

V. ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP
The Chemist I reports to the Laboratory Manager.
VI. EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or a related science.
1 to 3 years’ experience in a chemical laboratory setting preferred, but entry level considered.
A valid driver’s license & ability to obtain and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) are required.
Familiarity with Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater, SW 846 for the Analysis of Solid Waste, and relevant ASTM procedures is helpful.
Knowledgeable of IEPA and USEPA requirements for collection and testing of the environmental samples is helpful.
Well versed in Microsoft Excel and Word.
Physical Requirements
Physical requirements of the job include standing for long periods of time, carrying and transferring products, wearing a respirator for up to an hour at a time. Must be able to perform off-site sampling and testing under all types of weather conditions and sometimes at difficult site locations. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. to waist high.
