Chemist 3 performs an essential role by providing analytical services and results accurately, efficiently, and in a timely manner to clients through analyzing samples using conventional, MS, MSMS, HR-MSMS detectors, and other new technologies, implementing improvements, stabilizing analytical processes, leading innovation, and mentoring and technically guiding other Chemists to achieve the Company’s mission and objectives.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.
- Performs sample analysis as per documented methods and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
This includes but is not limited to:
- Using instruments with conventional, MS, MSMS, HR-MSMS Orbitrap detectors, and other new technologies.
- Entering data into the LIMS for the tests performed and is responsible for the results.
- Independently performing simple and complex (multi-screen test methods) analysis for routine and non-routine samples and complex matrix types. Issues with complex analyses are discussed with and potential solutions proposed to the Group Leader.
- Scheduling activities to provide an accurate and timely service to support business requirements.
- Ensuring that the samples are extracted and analyzed in accordance with registered and in-house validated methods.
- Ensuring that reference materials and working standards are maintained and documented according to relevant LABs/SOPs.
- Compiling and maintaining Internal Quality Control (IQC) data for analytes tested and performs periodic assessments of recovery trends. Consults with Group Leader to determine cases where QC or analytical data do not meet acceptable criteria based on established procedures and suggests course(s) of action.
- Remaining informed of hazards associated with chemicals, equipment, and their use in a laboratory setting. Works in a safe manner, using appropriate safeguards and personal protective equipment, to prevent injury to self and co-workers. Reports all accidents or unsafe working conditions to the safety committee or management.
- Performs responsibilities and duties of Chemist 1 and 2, including extractions, as needed, and directed by Group Leader.
- Troubleshoots issues with analytical procedures and coordinates with Group Leader on resolutions.
- Troubleshoots and performs routine, and preventative maintenance, verification, and calibration of analytical instrumentation with conventional, MS, MSMS, HR-MSMS detectors, and new technologies in accordance with documented procedures. Contacts vendors and keeps Group Leader informed when external repair is needed.
- Develops and updates controlled documents and SOPs, ensuring that current versions are up to date and are available to other Chemists.
- Performs review on data packages submitted by other Chemists for quality, accuracy, consistency, and completeness and ensures proper procedures are followed for ISO17025 compliance.
- Leads FDA studies and other client specific analytical projects.
- Leads R&D projects. Independently investigates, develops, and establishes improved or new extraction and analysis methodologies to meet laboratory and client needs.
- Coordinates new equipment implementation, instrument verification, and method optimization.
- Contributes to the continuous improvement of laboratory operations by proposing and implementing changes for improving extraction/analysis quality, increasing extraction/analysis method performance, reducing cost, or shortening extraction/analysis time.
- Obtains and retains an up-to-date knowledge of analytical techniques, equipment, and technologies. Participates in internal and external training. Participates in external professional and technical meetings for obtaining latest market insights, new technologies, and building networks.
- Supports Company and Laboratory’s mission and objectives by conducting market research, attending and joining associations, conferences, trade shows, seminars, and networking meetings with other companies and clients as needed or directed by the Group Leader.
- Acts as technical resource for sales and client inquiries.
- Assists the Group Leader, as needed with departmental budget, new investment, personnel planning, and workload coordination, following the Group Leader’s direction.
- Trains and mentors Chemists within department and is a resource to other Chemists as needed or directed.
- Supports Chemist 1 and 2 roles and directs tasks for Chemist 1 and 2. Acts as back-up for Group Leader in their absence.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Carries out supervisory responsibilities as assigned by Group Leader and in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing and training employees; planning, and directing work; appraising employee performance and assisting in career development; addressing complaints and reporting them to Group Leader.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
EDUCATION
Bachelor's degree (B.S.) in Chemistry or related science from a four-year college or university in addition to at least 5 years of directly applicable experience (Chemist II role); or equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Experience routinely analyzing large multi-residue pesticide screens such as QuEChERS and/or working with large data sets

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
OJT in understanding company operating systems, including the maintenance and operation of laboratory extraction and analytical equipment, and passing the Initial Demonstration of Capability (IDOC) for existing SOPs or other laboratory procedures.
