What you'll do:
The Chemical Technician I is critical to our analytical services that provide trace metals analysis using inductively coupled plasma coupled with optical emission spectroscopy or mass spectrometry (ICP-OES or ICP-MS) and chemical analysis using titrations .
- Works under immediate supervision
- Is a key contributor within the laboratory in the areas of safety, maintenance, operation and quality assurance
- Ensures lab is stocked with appropriate chemicals and supplies Prepares samples and solutions including volumetric and gravimetric solutions
- Accurately prepares samples, standards and solutions for analysis with some preparations requiring basic or advanced sample extractions
- Performs sample preparation for metals analysis using acid digestion and microwave-assisted digestion
- Prepares samples and titration unit for various titration methods
- Sets up, adjusts, and operates basic laboratory equipment following defined methods in support of projects within the trace metals and titrations laboratories
- Performs general lab housekeeping including analytical waste disposal, cleaning glassware, and ordering supplies as needed
- Ensures continuous operation of instruments and machinery by assisting lead chemists in performing preventative maintenance
- Uses computer systems and software programs - Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook), data acquisition programs - to acquire and document results within databases
- Effectively collaborates with colleagues on laboratory techniques, sample preparation, instrumentation, data analysis, documentation, and safety
- Ensures compliance of company/client SOP, protocols, safety policies, methods, or other procedures with government rules and regulations
What it takes to be successful in this role:
- Knowledge of analytical chemistry, demonstrated through
- Bachelor's degree in chemistry, chemical technology, biochemistry, or equivalent field with 0+ years of industrial laboratory experience
- Associate's degree in chemistry, chemical technology, biochemistry, or equivalent field with 2+ years of industrial laboratory experience
- Experience with titrations and ICP sample preparation and analysis or similar methods is preferred but not required
- Knowledge of laboratory safety precautions and protocols for safe handling and the disposal of hazardous agents/reagents, chemicals and materials
- Ability to understand and effectively communicate technical and business information, both oral and written to others, including co-workers, supervisors, and vendors
- Intermediate mathematical skills, including algebraic functions, statistics (mean, median, standard deviation, variance, probability), basic geometry (area, volume calculations), and scientific calculators
- Ability to work varied and extended hours/days, as business dictates
- Strong computer skills (Windows, MS Office)
