What We Are Looking For
The Chaplain provides spiritual and emotional support to patients, families, and staff to assist them in the healing process. These services are accompanied by a ministry of hospitality, crisis intervention, consultation, and on-call coverage as requested. Chaplain integrates theological education, clinical pastoral education (CPE), and spiritual care practice in caring for patients, families, and staff of all faiths, no faith, and cultures in a health care clinic setting. Manage and work collaboratively with volunteer and intern chaplains, and serve as an objective mediator to help defuse conflicts and crises by facilitating communication and cultural sensitivity. Occasional travel and participation in departmental rotations are required, to carry out spiritual duties.
Schedule: 4 days per week, 10 hours per day, Tuesday - Friday, 7:00 am - 6:00 pm | Location: San Bernardino, CA
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DELIVERABLES
- Assess patient/family, and staff spiritual needs and assist in dealing with illness, trauma, and stress. Provides crisis intervention as necessary using spiritual care assessment tools and screenings. Document patient/family and staff services provided. Must be able to serve patients/families and staff of any or no religion.
- Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide a safe environment and communicate effectively with all age groups of patients. Participate in the offering of
religiously diverse and culturally sensitive worship opportunities. - Provide chaplain services to accomplish SACH, and departmental objectives. Promote spiritual care resources and programs to patients, staff, and community members.
- Must be willing to work as part of an integrated care team. Participate in SAC Health's strategic plan for continuous quality improvement.
- Ability to travel to any of SAC Health locations or patient homes as requested. May include direct contact with patients with communicable diseases using accepted universal precautions; must have a reliable vehicle, valid driver's license, and auto insurance.
- Ability to maintain a working relationship between all departments within SAC Health.
- Work to meet patient needs effectively and resolve individual barriers through follow-up, advocacy and collaboration with SACH staff, SACH departmental programs, and other community service providers.
- Must be willing to make daily departmental spiritual care rounds at assigned SACH locations.
- Represent SACH to other groups and outside organizations as assigned. May be required to attend community and outside organizational meetings when necessary.
- Participate in the maintenance of administrative procedures for the department in accordance with the organization's policies. Assist in the coordination of clergy and pastoral visitors from the religious community. Keep records of pastoral activity.
- Contribute to the organization and community through publication, teaching, facilitating small groups and programs, and research. Identify topics, scope and format of these opportunities. Participate in teaching or lecturing and research relevant to the field.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education: The level of knowledge acquired through completing a Master's Degree in a Religion-based field of study from an accredited seminary, college, or university. Master's of Divinity is preferred.
- Licensure/Certification: Certification of completion of four (4) CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education) Units by an accredited Professional Chaplaincy Organization required. Certification through the Board of Chaplaincy Certification Institute (BCCI) is required. In lieu of required certification must obtain Board-Certification in accordance with the Spiritual Care Association or equivalent accredited associations within three years of acceptance of the position. Failure to receive certification within the required time may result in termination of employment. Valid California driver's license, and auto insurance. The Standard for Spiritual Care and Education (ACPE) Accreditation for CPE units is preferred.
- Experience: 3+ years within a healthcare setting or 4+ years in pastoral or chaplaincy setting required. Familiarity and comfort working with issues related to homelessness, substance abuse, mental health diagnosis, and history of trauma are helpful.
- Essential Technical/Motor Skills: The ability to use a computer on a routine basis and complete required documentation. Use of word processor, spread sheets and internet.
- Interpersonal Skills: An empathy for the problems experienced by patients and families; commitment to help the distressed. The communication skills necessary to counsel patients, families, and employees. The analytical ability to assess patients' spiritual needs and sense of well-being and find appropriate solutions to patient problems. Bilingual English and Spanish preferred.
- Essential Mental Abilities: The ability to work well under pressure, think critically, organize, and prioritize and problem solve. The ability to follow direction and maintain a calm presence under pressure. Ability to delegate work assignments in a fast-paced setting.
- Work Eligibility: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Must not now or in the future require sponsorship for employment visas.
