Job Summary:
To be considered for this position you MUST have a Vet Tech License or have 3+ years of experience as a trained Vet Assistant in an animal hospital to be considered for this position.
We are looking for a compassionate Certified Veterinary Technician to join our team! You will be responsible for assisting the Veterinarians in the practice of veterinary medicine and surgery, dentistry, in-patient and out-patient care, technician examinations, laboratory duties, treatments, drug dosages and dispensing, and medical record notation and maintenance. Our ideal candidate should be reliable, responsible, and take initiative on the job, going above and beyond by becoming a leader in our hospital. You must have a passion for caring for animals and excellent customer service skills. Communication, flexibility and teamwork are necessary with our hospital team and with the pet caregivers.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Admit patients for in-patient or out-patient procedures.
- Perform technician exams according to the hospital procedure
- Prepare and administer vaccines according to the hospital procedure
- Fill prescriptions in-house, online, and written & authorized by a DVM
- Collect all lab samples - Prepare samples to send out or perform in-house tests
- Maintain the laboratory log and equipment
- Perform all patient treatments ordered by attending DVM (medicating, TPR, close observation and charting, monitoring intensive care patients, taking and developing x-rays, using IV pumps, monitors, dental machines, intra-oral radiology, and anesthesia machines)
- Prepare patients for surgery, including intubation and inducing anesthesia
- Monitor anesthesia and communicate clearly with the attending DVM during surgery
- Maintain all surgical equipment, surgery packs, surgical inventory, and surgery suites
- Clean, scale, and polish teeth with the dental machine and hand instruments
- Be well versed in hospital software, digital medical record charting, surgical monitoring charts, dental charts, hospitalized patient charts, all in-patient & out-patient charts, and keep very thorough professional notes
- Keep treatment, surgery, exam rooms, and kennels clean and sanitary
- Assist our Client Coordinators at the Front desk when needed, taking calls & scheduling appointments.
- Maintain & monitor controlled drugs according to hospital procedures
- Maintain & monitor inventory items
- Other duties and responsibilities as needed and assigned
Requirements and Qualifications:
- Veterinary Technician IL State License or equal
- If not licensed, then a minimum of 3 years experience as a veterinary assistant
- Requires bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, standing/walking on tile floor up to 10 hours a day
- Requires lifting, carrying, or restraining animals up to 200 pounds. (will be assisted by other staff members in lifting animals over 40 pounds)
- Genuinely enjoys working with animals and their people
- Calm and efficient during a medical crisis
- Able to work effectively with doctors and team members
- Excellent communication skills in person and over the phone
- Ability to support clients through end-of-life decisions and last moments with their pets
- May be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises, and animal feces. May be exposed to bites, scratches, and contagious diseases
