JOB SUMMARY
The Sterile Processing Technician is assigned duties performing decontamination, preparation, sterilization and distribution of surgical instruments and medical equipment throughout the surgery center, utilizing infection control and safety practices during all phases of the process.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Consistently performs sterilization functions in accordance with hospital policies, state regulations and manufacturer guidelines to ensure the availability of sterile supplies and instrumentation.
- Maintains accurate sterilization procedure records. Verifies sterilizer record charts to ensure proper sterilization temperatures, pressures and cycle times for each load. Performs “Bowie/Dick and spore tests daily for each load that contains implantable devices Immediately reports malfunctions to the SPD supervisor.
- Strictly adheres to hospital guidelines, universal precautions and aseptic technique. Maintains proper personal appearance and hygiene as per CRMC standards of appearance Uses PPE when performing duties in the decontamination area.
- Communicates with all contacts in a manner that promotes and maintains positive and professional relationships. Responds to STAT requests immediately.
- Performs daily and weekly maintenance inspections for all areas of the department to ensure a sanitary and organized work environment.
- Develops thorough knowledge of all equipment/machinery in SPD and operates same in a safe manner. Uses the PICIS System to obtain surgical case information in order to assemble case cart requests. Uses the materials information system to maintain inventory accuracy.
- Inspects assigned area of responsibility at least once per week for outdated supplies, integrity of products, accurate supply levels, proper supply location and rotation. Reports discrepancies to the SPD supervisor and reprocesses all outdate supplies.
REQUIREMENTS
High School graduate or equivalent. Must be able to work independently with little or no supervision. Previous experience working in a medical position, being detailed oriented required. Previous Central Supply/SPD experience and previous computer experience preferred. CRCST Certification Required. Must be able to stand for long periods of time, stooping, bending. Must be able to lift instrument sets up to 25 pounds.
