- JOB RELATIONSHIPS
- The CNM reports to the Director of Maternal Child Health in conjunction with the Chief Nursing Officer and the Vice President of Medical Affairs.
- The CNM practices under the rules and regulations of the North Carolina Board of Nursing and the NC Midwifery Joint Committee Medical Board.
- The CNM will maintain a collaborative provider agreement with collaborating provider as required by practice guidelines.
- DEFINITION OF POSITION
The Inpatient Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) will provide comprehensive healthcare to women admitted to Carteret Health Care during the antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum periods. The CNM will work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to manage and coordinate the care of women across the lifespan, including, but not limited to, well-woman, gynecological care, health education, family planning, management and delivery of low-risk pregnancies and newborn care. The CNM will assess, diagnose, treat, and educate patients and their families to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
Antepartum Care
- Conducts comprehensive assessments, including physical examinations, fetal monitoring and prenatal education, ordering relevant diagnostic tests and interpreting test results to formulate accurate diagnoses
- Identifies and manages complications and risk factors during pregnancy, referring to obstetrician as necessary
- Develops and formulates individualized plans of care
- Provides counseling and education on prenatal health, nutrition, exercise, stress management and childbirth preparation
- Documents all patient care provided according to organizational policies and standard of care agreement
Labor and Delivery
- Assists, manages and supports the labor and delivery process, providing support and guidance to the mother, interpreting fetal heart rate patterns and responding to emergencies
- Monitors the progress of labor and fetal well-being, utilizing appropriate pain management techniques, including holistic methods, medications and epidurals
- Performs deliveries, including vaginal deliveries and assisting with complicated deliveries as needed
Postpartum Care
- Monitors mothers and newborns in the immediate postpartum period, assessing for complications
- Identifies and manages postpartum complications, coordinating care with other healthcare providers as needed
- Supports breastfeeding and provides lactation counseling
- Educates on postpartum recovery, infant care and family planning
Patient Advocacy and Education
- Provides guidance, education, emotional support and counseling to patients and families throughout all stages of care, to include prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, newborn and interconception care
- Advocates for the rights and preferences of mothers and families throughout the childbirth experience
Documentation, Communication and Collaboration
- Maintains accurate and detailed medical records of all patient interactions and interventions, adhering to hospital policies, protocols and legal requirements
- Collaborates effectively with obstetricians, pediatricians, nurses and other healthcare professionals to coordinate care and ensure comprehensive treatment plans, referring as necessary
- Establishes and maintains a professional working relationship with all members of the healthcare team, serving as a role model to staff
- Utilizes effective communication skills with patients, families, visitors and all members of the healthcare team
- QUALIFICATIONS
- Professional
- Master's or Post-Graduate degree in Nursing Midwifery
- Board certification as a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) through the American Midwifery Certification Board preferred
- State licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) with prescriptive authority
- Prior experience in midwifery or obstetrics, preferably in an inpatient hospital setting
- Strong clinical and critical thinking skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-based healthcare environment
- Commitment to delivering high-quality, compassionate, and family-centered care to patients
- Stays current with advancements in midwifery and maternal healthcare through continuing education and professional development
- Participates in training and mentoring of new staff and students, assisting with class development as appropriate
