About the Job
SCOPE OF POSITION: Performs a variety of Sterile Processing Department functions including decontamination, preparation (set assembly,) distribution, maintenance and control of sterile and non-sterile supplies and equipment for assigned patient population, as well as problem solving equipment failures to fill customer requests and needs. Provides excellent service to all customers, meeting or exceeding their needs/expectations, to ensure continuous quality and performance improvement. Reports to the Assistant Director, Central Sterile Processing.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintains effective working relationships and collaborates with customers, co-workers, physicians and other team members including the ability to effectively respond to emergency requests and monitoring flow of equipment.
- Performs decontamination duties including sorting, disassembly, cleaning, re-assembly and inspection of equipment, instruments, trays and supplies.
- Assembles and processes instrument sets, tray and supplies per department standards.
- Utilizes all types of sterilizers, ETO and Sterrad Sterilizer. Effectively resolves equipment and other problems.
- Assembles surgical case carts according to surgical procedure pick list and distributes to the OR. Assembles ancillary carts including Code 3 Carts. Transport/handle prescription medications relative to case carts and code carts.
- Maintains required knowledge and skills encompassing updated skills and procedures. Completes general/unit/department specific competencies.
- Demonstrates critical thinking skills, problem solving and organizational skills.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Manual dexterity.
- Ability to lift heavy objects (up to 35 lbs.) and to pull, push heavy portable equipment. Frequent bending, reaching, repetitive hand movement.
- Potential exposure to all blood and body fluids and blood borne pathogens.
- High School graduate or GED.
- Successful completion of Central Sterile Processing Technician course to be eligible to sit for the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution certification exam. Must complete 400 hours on the job training requirement and take certification exam within the first six (6) months of employment
- Six (6) months experience in Sterile Processing Department working with surgical instruments preferred.
- Central Supply Certification or Certification as Surgical Technologist required. Certification must be maintained going forward.
- Must have basic computer skills and ability to access internet and other programs applicable to Waterbury Hospital procedures.
- Perform automated functions that fall within job responsibility.
