Position Overview:
The Central Processing Technician provides direct support to the Perioperative and Patient Care departments by processing instruments and trays, distributing supplies and patient care equipment as needed for patient care, and restocking of crash carts.
Job Description :
OPERATION OF STERILIZATION EQUIPMENT
• Loads and operates all sterilization equipment according to manufacturer's guidelines, medical center policies and safe practices. Maintains Jogs of sterilization activities and performance monitoring.
• Performs sterilizer performance monitoring according to medical center policy and following manufacturer's instructions.
• Notifies supervisor or manager immediately if supplies for sterilization are low in inventory levels.
DECONTAMINATION OF INSTRUMENTS AND EQUIPMENT
• Receives, decontaminates , cleans and prepares instruments and equipment according to manufacturer's recommendations , medical center policies and safe practices.
• Operates and uses all decontamination equipment, products and supplies according to manufacturer's recommendations, medical center policies and safe practice.
• Cleans and disinfects all work surfaces, equipment and transport devices.
• Makes rounds on all patient care units to retrieve equipment and instruments for decontamination.
INSTRUMENTATION ASSEMBLY AND PREPARATION FOR STERILIZATION
• Inspects, tests, assembles, wraps/packages and labels surgical instruments for sterilization following medical center
• Prioritizes effectively when determining order of set/tray reassembly
• Accurately assemble all surgical instrument sets and trays without supervision
• Communicates closely with case cart preparation staff to ensure needed instruments are sterile and ready for scheduled procedures.
• Maintains workstation in an orderly manner and ensures area is restocked prior to leaving station.
ISSUES SUPPLIES, INSTRUMENTS AND EQUIPMENT AS NEEDED
• Issues requested supplies and equipment to patient care units upon request.
• Issues sterilized instruments to patient care areas (cath labs, surgery, etc.) after completion of sterilization.
• Maintains/restocks floor specialty carts and crash carts following written protocols.
• Obtains charge requisitions for all patient-chargeable items issued by CPD; delivers to designated locations within unit.
• Places orders delivery and pick up for rental specialty equipment as requested by nursing units, following medical center policy.
• Rotates stock and checks for outdated supplies.
• Handles verbal requests from patient care units in an efficient, courteous manner while demonstrating a clear knowledge of the equipment and supplies provided in the medical center.
• Notifies supervisor or manager immediately if inventory levels of equipment or supplies are low in inventory levels.
EDUCATION
_Equivalent experience will be accepted in lieu of the required degree or diploma._
HS Diploma or equivalent education/experience
Other: Equivalent combination of education and pertinent/directly related experience in Central Processing in an acute-care hospital environment
Other: Graduate of an approved Central Processing program or equivalent education/experience
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE AS TYPICALLY ACQUIRED IN:
Previous Central Processing experience required
Graduate of approved program with completion of required externship in an acute care hospital performing instrument processing/handling functions
Experience in an acute care hospital
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
Sterilization methods including steam and gas plasma.
Handling of sterile items.
Medical terminology, basic microbiology, anatomy, physiology and elementary physics principles as they relate to daily Central Processing functions.
General use, identification, care and assembly of surgical instrumentation Basic principles and methods of decontamination.
Ability to competently perform and evaluate standard performance monitoring tests used for validation of sterilizers and sterilization cycles.
Competently operate all sterilization modalities in use at the medical center (Steris V Pro and Steam).
Competently operate equipment used in cleaning and high-level disinfection activities (washer-decontaminator, ultrasonic cleaners) Advanced instrument identification skills
Able to understand, speak, read and write in English.
Basic computer skills.
Ability to smell required.
