The Senior Services Division is actively seeking one (1) Center Activities Specialist.

This is technical work at the working supervisor level in developing, implementing, overseeing, and promoting activities and programs at a senior center, including oversight of building maintenance and security. The work requires a knowledge of the objectives, practices, and procedures of social, educational, and recreational activities and programs, as well as knowledge of facilities maintenance, which is acquired through a combination of training and considerable on the job experience. Plans, organizes, assigns, reviews, and evaluates the work activities of assigned staff and volunteers. Contacts require skills in understanding, influencing, and communicating with others and are important in providing services to participants and in supervising employees and volunteers. The work is subject to somewhat diversified procedures and precedents with latitude permitted in considering the most appropriate practice or procedure to follow and involve differing situations requiring the use of judgment in searching for solutions or new applications. The physical demands require lifting, carrying and rearranging furnishings, displays, supplies and equipment for activities, programs and special events which includes lifting and carrying objects weighing less than 50 pounds. Employees in this class may be required to work on weekends and holidays and outside normal working hours. Operates vehicles and standard office equipment such as personal computers using word processing, spreadsheet, database, and other related software, peripheral and electronic devices, copiers, calculators, and scanners. The work is performed under general supervision where the work assignments are varied and, although they are subject to standardized practices and procedures, the worker is permitted to set priorities with the superior's approval.
## Examples of Work
- Promotes activities and programs, recruit volunteers and participants, and consults with individuals and groups to identify services and programs.
- Develops, implements, and oversees a variety of social, educational, and recreational activities and programs.
- Inspects assigned facility and equipment to identify deficiencies in safety, cleanliness or maintenance and corrects deficiencies.
- Coordinates activities and programs with other divisions, departments, and community organizations.
- Orders and maintains inventory of supplies and equipment.
- Organizes, assigns, reviews, and evaluates the work of assigned staff and volunteers.
- Prepares and maintains required records and reports on activities, programs, and participants.
- Operates specialized equipment, such as a scanner, and reviews, downloads and prepares reports based on downloaded information.
- Operates a personal computer using word processing, spreadsheet, database, email, and related applications.
- Responds to written and verbal inquiries relating to services and programs.
- Provides instruction and training to subordinate employees and volunteers.
- Performs first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation procedures as required.
- Communicates clear direction, manages for results, and leads organizational change.
- Assigns responsibility, takes corrective action, demonstrates leadership in evaluating, developing, and motivating employees.
- Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonvilles competencies.
- Performs related work as required.
## Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of the objectives, practices, and procedures of social, educational, and recreational activities and programs for senior citizens.
- Knowledge of facilities maintenance.
- Knowledge of social service and community resources for referral and program support affecting seniors.
- Knowledge of safety procedures and rules to be followed during social and recreational activities.
- Knowledge of supervisory methods and practices.
- Ability to plan, organize, implement, and assess social, educational, and recreational activities and programs affecting the senior population.
- Ability to train, plan, organize, assign, review, and evaluate the work of assigned staff and volunteers.
- Ability to operate specialized equipment, such as a scanner, review, download and prepare reports based on downloaded information.
- Ability to operate a personal computer using word processing, spreadsheet, database, email, and related applications.
- Ability to promote programs through contacts with community resources and organizations.
- Ability to read, understand and apply written materials pertaining to social, educational, and recreational activities and services.
- Ability to maintain records and prepare correspondence, emails and reports using a personal computer.
- Ability to interact with the public applying recognized customer service standards.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
- Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
- Ability to perform first-aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation procedures.
## Open Requirements/Supplemental Information
- A two-year combination of education and/or experience in developing or overseeing social, educational or recreational programs.
- Supervisory experience is preferred.
- Must pass background screening on a local, state and federal level as required by the State of Florida Children and Family Services or Elder Affairs.
LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION
:
CPR and First Aide Certification is required within six months of appointment and must be maintained.
