REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
This position reports directly to the Plant Manager
LOCATION:
Midwest Preferred. Over the road - home weekends.
PRINCIPAL OBJECTIVE:
Under general direction, drives a tractor/trailer unit, delivering products to customers and branch plants, and make backhauls as required.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Drive tractor/trailer unit according to company schedule to deliver products to customers. Report any problems encountered with delivery or customers to Manager or designee, immediately.
- Overnight travel is required for most deliveries, utilizing sleeper berths.
- Always maintain a valid commercial driver's license (CDL).
- Comply with all state driving laws, DOT, OSHA, FDA, and EPA regulations.
- Utilize Electronic Logging Device (ELD) to complete Driver Vehicle Information Report (DVIR) pre-trip vehicle inspection and post-trip checks daily.
- Utilize cell phone to connect and interact with DESCARTES routing, logistics and communication application to keep customers, sales, and customer service informed of delivery status and to report delivery issues and/or changes.
- Follow, support, and implement all requirements of Food Safety program.
- Follow, support, and implement all requirements of Bio Security or related animal health and safety programs.
- Follow safe lifting, safe driving, and other safe work practices always.
- Wear personal protective equipment as required or recommended.
- Keep truck & trailer and work areas neat, clean, and orderly.
- Move product to the back of the trailer and unload when required.
- Operate trucks efficiently to obtain the best possible fuel economy. Meet safety and maintenance requirements.
- Communicate to the Plant Manager or designee any maintenance or repair needs for all equipment in a timely fashion.
- Account for receipts acquired using the company-issued credit card/fuel card/service card and turn in the receipts on a weekly basis.
- Complete all truck paperwork and fuel mileage reports within Company guidelines. Remain flexible to change as business dictates.
- Backhaul raw materials or products for third-party clients on return trips after delivering products to customers or other branch plants when required.
- Display a courteous, cooperative attitude in all contacts with customers, sales personnel, and other employees. Always promote a positive image of the Company in actions and appearance. Maintain uniform and appearance in accordance with standards acceptable to Safe Feed Safe Food, customers, and management.
- Perform other work-related duties as requested or required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Be able to succeed within and adhere to the culture of the Furst-McNess Company.
- Ability to perform essential job functions with or without accommodation.
- Education is equivalent to a high school diploma. Have a record of safe and efficient commercial truck driver experience, commercial truck driver training and at least 200,000 miles experience.
- Must always possess a valid driver's license and maintain a good driving record (within guidelines set forth in company vehicle policy).
- Ability to read, write, and speak English, and perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Ability to learn and comply with regulatory requirements imposed on trucking operations by the DOT.
- Ability to lift 70 lb. bags of product and move 2,000 lb. pallets of product with a pallet jack on a regular basis, and heavier loads on an occasional basis. Ability to lift, carry, push, pull and stoop when unloading products from trailers
- Ability to pass DOT biennial physical, written and driving examinations, and NIDA drug screens, when required by law or Company policy.
- Good communication skills, both oral and written, and capable of utilizing these skills at all levels of the Company as well as externally.
- Ability to provide outstanding customer service to all associates and management staff, showing a sense of urgency relative to solving problems, performing assigned tasks, employee concerns, etc.
- Ability to effectively organize work schedules and manage multiple assignments by utilizing time management skills to ensure day-to-day assignments and special projects are completed within guidelines agreed upon.
- Ability to work as an effective team member within the Trucking department and company. Willingness to pitch in and do work that may not be a specific part of the job description for the overall good of the department and company.
- Ability to be flexible and be willing to change along with recommending changes that can enhance our ability to serve both internal and external customers more effectively and in a professional manner. Respect other peoples' points of view and be able to take constructive feedback.
