The Cyclyx Circularity Center (CCC) facility in Houston is a first of its kind recycling facility which accepts clean and mixed sources of waste plastics and processes them into usable feedstock for the advanced and mechanical recycling market. This facility is significant in scale, with an annual capacity of >400 million lbs. of inbound plastic.
Role Overview
As a first of its kind recycling center, this role will require a person with an entrepreneurial spirit and a proven track record for developing and coordinating detailed maintenance plans to ensure our equipment operates at optimal performance. The role will require a person with an aptitude for 1) Planning the equipment maintenance of a large, bulk material handling facility, and 2) Flexing between leadership and individual contributor activities in support of standing up and operating the facility. This position requires a hands-on person who regularly interacts with the maintenance and operations team and has a keen eye towards process improvement and optimization.
During the mechanical completion and commissioning of the plant, (scheduled to be operational in May 2025) the focus of this role will be on supporting the Maintenance Manager through the development of processes and systems that maintain optimal up-time for all plant equipment. In this position, the role will be responsible for team building, training adherence, and improvement plans.
The Maintenance Planner will have prior experience with plastics recycling or bulk material processing and handling operations on an industrial scale.
The safety of all personnel is the highest priority. The Maintenance Planner is responsible for supporting and contributing to a strong safety culture that is evident in the plant's daily operations and EHS related KPI's.
The Maintenance Planner has material impact on the ability of the CCC to meet its operational and financial goals.
Role Responsibilities
A Maintenance Planner at a bulk material handling facility that optically sorts waste plastics, shreds waste plastics, and uses pellet mills to pelletize waste plastics has several core responsibilities to ensure the facility operates efficiently and safely. Here are the primary duties:
Equipment Maintenance and Reliability
1. Preventive Maintenance Program
- Assist in developing and implementing a comprehensive preventive maintenance program for all equipment, including equipment such as optical sorters, conveying equipment, shredders, pelletizers, and mobile equipment.
- Schedule regular inspections, lubrication, adjustments, and part replacements to prevent unexpected breakdowns.
2. Equipment Repair and Troubleshooting
- Assist in oversee and coordinate repairs when equipment malfunctions, ensuring minimal downtime.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and control issues to restore equipment functionality quickly.
- Experience reading Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID's) and applying to operational equipment. Includes experience reading OEM manuals and documentation.
3. Condition Monitoring
- Use condition monitoring tools and techniques to track the performance of critical machinery.
- Administer systems to analyze data from sensors and diagnostic equipment to predict potential failures and address them proactively.
4. CMMS System
- Supervise all aspects of the CMMS in a manufacturing environment.
- Plan and execute mechanical and electrical Best Practice goals within the CMMS environment. Develop and execute plant equipment revitalization projects.
- Partner with Maintenance and Operations Departments on the development of maintenance schedules ensuring availability of necessary parts, etc.
Safety and Compliance
1. Safety Management
- Ensures that the facility and all personnel always operate safely and promotes an environment whereby safety is a priority. Follows standard safety procedures, corrects safety and environmental hazards. Reads, understands, and implements lockout/tagout, safety rules, job hazard analyses, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Thoroughly and promptly investigates any accidents or near misses in conjunction with the Environmental compliance manager as well as the Health & Safety manager to ensure that any unsafe practices or conditions are addressed and eliminated immediately.
- Conduct regular safety audits and risk assessments, and implement corrective actions as needed.
- Develop and oversee the implementation of standard operating procedures (emergency procedures) and their associated safety precautions built into the routine workflow.
2. Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure all maintenance practices comply with local, state, and federal regulations, including environmental, health, and safety regulations.
- Maintain records of maintenance activities to demonstrate compliance during inspections and audits.
- Responsible for maintaining plant cleanliness.
Team Management and Training
1. Staff Supervision
- Assist in scheduling and assigning work to maintenance staff, ensuring proper coverage for all shifts.
- Estimates labor hours, skillsets, parts, materials, equipment and special tools required to complete proactive jobs in a safe and efficient manner.
- Creates a Weekly Technician Schedule that includes priority planned jobs and preventative maintenance tasks that utilize 100% of the available technician labor hours.
2. Training and Development
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement and knowledge sharing within the team.
- Trains site employees on CMMS and ensures that it is working with integrity and is being utilized.
Inventory and Resource Management
1. Spare Parts, Tools and Consumables Inventory
- Manage inventory of spare parts and maintenance supplies to ensure critical components are available when needed.
- Prepare scope of work documents necessary to obtain firm pricing for contractor work.
- Establish and maintain the current bill of materials for all current equipment and create bills of material for new equipment along with stock justifications for these parts to be put in the warehouse.
2. Resource Allocation
- Assist in allocation of resources effectively to balance maintenance needs with budget constraints.
- Prioritize maintenance tasks based on criticality and impact on production.
Process Improvement and Efficiency
1. Root Cause Analysis
- Conduct root cause analysis of equipment failures to identify underlying issues and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Participate in and facilitate Kaizen activities, as determined and delegated by Management team.
Documentation and Reporting
1. Maintenance Records
- Maintain detailed records of all maintenance activities, including work orders, equipment histories, and maintenance schedules.
- Utilize computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) to track and document maintenance tasks and performance metrics.
- Create and establish processes with the ERP and CMMS as part of the initial plant commissioning.
2. Reporting
- Communicate effectively with senior management and other stakeholders regarding maintenance plans and progress.
Coordination and Collaboration
1. Interdepartmental Coordination:
- Conducts weekly planning & scheduling meetings with Production to determine work order priorities, communicate work order status and alter planned maintenance activities if necessary.
2. Industry/SME Application:
- Reads, analyzes, and interprets common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents
- Ability to learn about new equipment with OEM training/literature and apply to operational maintenance.
By fulfilling these core responsibilities, a Maintenance Planner ensures the continuous and efficient operation of the bulk material handling facility, contributing to the overall success and productivity of the plant.
Experience and Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years' experience as a Maintenance Planner, or position with similar responsibilities.
- Excellent judgment regarding health, safety, environmental and fire protection risks with emphasis on injury prevention and business continuity.
- Experience with recycling equipment and processes, including but not limited to shredders, contaminant removal technologies, belt and pneumatic conveyors, optical sortation, and palletization.
- Experience managing vendors/contractors.
- Expert understanding of mechanical plastic recycling equipment.
- Proficient communication skills both verbally and in writing.
- Excellent business acumen, commitment to teamwork, and results driven.
- Confident, proactive, and possessing strong problem-solving skills.
- Impeccable personal and professional ethics.
- Ability to build, maintain, and contribute to a team environment.
- Travel may be required: 0 to 25%
Education and Training
- Associate's degree or greater in an operational or engineering related field.
- Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).
- Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, Microsoft Dynamics preferred.
- Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) experience.
Position Mechanics
Reports to: Maintenance Manager
Type: Salaried; full time with full benefits
Work Hours: Generally, 8:00am - 5:00pm; this is a multi-shift, 24/7 operation, so there will be evening and weekend work.
Location: Houston, TX
Work environment: professional office and manufacturing.
Travel: Up to 25%

- Operate fire extinguishing equipment ranging from handheld extinguishers to 200 lb. portable units.
- Access confined spaces and pressure vessels through standard 12" by 16" manways.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements.
