About the Position
The Cashier & Barista performs a variety of duties associated with the preparation and service of beverages and retail items, along with sanitation, for board plan, summer conferences, and special events within the COOP Library caf and the Dining Center. The position requires to maintain the highest level of customer service at all times, and is required to work early morning hours, evening hours, weekends, and holidays as needed. This position is considered essential staff and must work during inclement weather and other Campus emergencies.
Primary Responsibilities
- Prepare and sell coffee drinks by following prescribed recipes and preparation techniques for coffee drinks, such as, espresso, caffe latte, and cappuccino
- Welcome customers by determining their coffee or beverage interests and needs
- Educate customers by presenting and explaining the coffee drink menu and answering questions
- Maintain inventories by replenishing coffee bean supply; stocking coffee brewing equipment; and maintaining and stocking supplies, pastries, and cookies grab and go items for caf
- Assist with putting away and restocking of delivered items
- Keep equipment operating by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, maintaining supplies, performing preventive maintenance, and calling supervisor for repairs
- Maintain safe and healthy work environment by following Haverford Dining standards and sanitation regulations
- Enhance coffee shop reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests and exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments
- Adhere to standards outlined by sanitation program (Serve Safe) and local, state, and federal guidelines
- Assist in training and supervising of student worker staff
- Other duties as assigned
Line of Report: The Casher/Barista reports to Retail Operations Manager.
Minimum Qualifications
- One year of experience as a barista or cashier in a high-volume environment
- Current Serv Safe certification or the ability to obtain certification
Professional Competencies
- Demonstrated ability to read and follow written instructions (e.g., menus, production sheets, and recipes)
- Ability to perform simple arithmetic
- Proficient in oral and written communication with customers, co-workers, and management
- Good manual dexterity and sight
- Must be mobile between workstations and numerous campus buildings
- Must be able to obtain golf cart certification
- Solid reading, hearing, and speaking skills
- Working knowledge of safety precautions associated with the food service industry and the ability to maintain or obtain current ServSafe certification
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
- Must be available to work catered events and special functions
Preferred Qualifications
- One year of experience as a barista or cashier in a college/university setting

Special Requirements
- Must be able to work in extreme temperatures
- Must be able to stand for periods up to 4 hours at a time, bend over, lift up to 50 pounds, and climb stairs
