R&D Maintenance Services, Inc. provides operations and maintenance services on U.S Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) projects throughout the southeast - since 1980. We are the Operations and Maintenance Contractor for the Tennessee Tombigbee Waterway/Alabama Rivers Project providing machinery and facility maintenance and repair on several hundred miles of waterway and 9 locks/dams/spillways on the system. Position is based in Columbus, MS. R&D is an EEO Employer.
General Description:
Performs the full range of skilled carpenter trade functions such as the installation, maintenance, or repair of wood, drywall, or metal products used in industrial structures, facilities, recreation equipment, fences, handrails, docks and walkways, etc. Includes framing, decking, and finishing using a variety of standard and specialized hand and power tools and measuring equipment in both field and shop environments. Lead or assist with design, planning, layout, assessing requirements, and repair/installation.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS:
- Interior/Exterior demolition of walls and construction of new walls.
- Assess labor, material, and equipment needed for repair or upgrade of recreation structures.
- Repair/replacement of wood-decked ramps and docks.
- Layout and construction of temporary equipment access stairways and ramps.
- Remove and replace wood or fiber cement siding and trim.
- Repair or replace interior and exterior doors.
- Repair/Replacement of timber retaining walls and outdoor camping/recreation equipment.
- Repair/Replacement of decorative and security fencing.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of the principles, methods, standard practices, tools, and techniques used in the skilled carpenter trade.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
- Knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply material specifications and make proper material selections.
- Knowledge of and ability to perform effective and efficient sequencing and layout of the work.
- Ability to plan and schedule multiple tasks and effectively prioritize and plan work activities; uses time efficiently; plans for additional resources; analyze and solve problems; make decisions; exercise good judgment; perform well under pressure; adapt well to change.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Must have knowledge of and mathematical ability to perform required measurements and calculations.
- Ability to demonstrate overall safe work behavior; including the utilization of proper safety equipment and adhering to safety guidelines.
- Ability to operate an manlift, forklift, and/or bucket lift.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
- High School Diploma or formal training in carpentry work.
- Must have five (5) years of experience in commercial/industrial carpentry work including layout, framing, decking, and trim.
- Must be able to operate a variety of specialized equipment including saws, drills, presses and various hand and power tools; drives a vehicle to conduct work.
- Must be able to read and interpret drawings and schematics and to effectively assess existing structures/items for upgrading or repair.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- Must have knowledge of applicable codes and mathematical ability to perform required calculations.
- Ability to demonstrate overall safe work behavior; including the utilization of proper safety equipment and adhering to safety guidelines.
- Maintains various records related to work orders and assigned activities.
- Maintains tools, vehicle, and work areas in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
- Required to successfully complete background check, MVR, and drug/alcohol screenings.
- Field travel and occasional overtime. Occasional overnight stays.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Frequent walking and standing.
- Frequently lifts/carries up to 20 pounds with occasional lifting up to 50 pounds; occasional pulling up to 20 pounds.
- Frequently climbing ladders and working at heights.
- Frequent use of power and hand tools.
- Frequent balancing, kneeling, reaching (full range) bending, handling, feeling, climbing, smelling and twisting; occasional crawling and reaching; working in cramped and confined spaces.
