Mercy Hospital is currently seeking Senior Surgical Assistants for opportunities to work strictly in the Cardiovascular OR. These positions are primarily for the Cardiac OR, however if no work is available in the Cardiac Suite, the Senior Surgical Assistant will be scrubbed into procedures in the Main OR. The successful applicant will perform in the first assist role alongside the surgeon in cardiovascular and thoracic procedures. Within the role, you will first assist in various duties during the surgical procedure such as endo vein harvesting for Coronary Artery Bypass, Aortic, Mitral and Tricuspid valve repair/ replace, Aortic aneurysm and Thoracic cases. There will be a comprehensive and extensive orientation/ training provided at our main campus for those with limited experience.
A caregiver in this position works four 10-hour shifts Monday - Friday from 6:30AM - 5:00PM with weeknight on-call, weekend and holiday rotations.

- Facilitate the delivery of nursing care to patients.
- Perform operative duties and assistance .
- Function primarily as a first or second assistant during cardiovascular and thoracic operative procedures.
- Participate as a first or second assistant in other surgical specialties, as requested .
- Participate in patient education and transportation .
- Review perio perative patient data with each surgeon.
- Assist in setting up and cleaning the surgical suite, supplied, equipment and instruments.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- Graduate of an approved physician assistant program OR graduate of an accredited or military surgical assistant program OR completion of the Registered Nurse First Assist (RNFA) course OR three years of recent experience in first assisting with cardiovascular and cardiothoracic procedures.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA).
- One year of operating room experience.
- Knowledge of physiological and anatomical aspects of surgical procedures, including surgical competency in vein harvesting.
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
- Certification for First Assisting.
- Endoscopic vein harvesting experience.

- Have exceptional dexterity and quick response ability.
- Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patient, manual and ginger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination.
- Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time.
- Requires working under stressful conditions and irregular hours.
- Exposure to communicable diseases and/or body fluids.
- Able to safely transport patients on stretchers to bed using good body mechanics.
- Works extended hours, as necessary.
- Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
