About the Job
UAB Callahan Eye is seeking an Ophthalmic Technician to work at our Tuscaloosa location. The candidate will report directly to the Ophthalmic Director, under general supervision, and assist with the daily patient care and clinic flow. The candidate will also promote CEHC's mission, vision, and valuesinternally and externally.
General Duties & Responsibilities
- Requires a good understanding of ophthalmic practice and patient care.
- Ability to communicate effectively with staff, physicians, patients, and the public.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to collect data and maintain accurate records.
- Ability to operate and perform routine maintenance on various types of medical/testing/office equipment.
- Requires working knowledge of eye anatomy, disease, symptoms, and ocular medications.
- Knowledge of A-Scans, fundus photos, nerve fiber analysis, and fluorescein angiography.
- Ability to work with others to meet the needs of CEH in accomplishing practice goals.
Primary Responsibilities
- Promptly and professionally assists the physician in patient care.
- Perform technical workups and patient interviews, document medical history, special testing, and minor in-office surgical procedures.
- Communicate with patients regarding follow-up care, surgeries, procedures, change in schedule, symptoms, surgery scheduling, etc.
- Demonstrates flexibility in job assignments.
- Understand and utilize proper sterile techniques.
- Returns phone calls to patients and pharmacies.
- Assists in minor surgery.
- Maintain and clean ophthalmic instruments.
- Administrator and/or prepare medications.
- Maintain patientsrsquo; confidentiality.
- Efficiently and accurately interviews patients and documents histories.
- Accurately performs Refractions, Lensometry, Keratometry, Tonometry, Visual Fields, Amslers, Muscle Testing, Pupil Exams, Topography, and other tests as required.
- Attend ophthalmology training as necessary to perform the job efficiently.
- Obtain COA certification after a year of employment.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- It may require travel to other satellite clinics/main hospitals as needed.
