A CAD Mechanical Designer is tasked with creating and modifying
technical drawings and developing 2D and 3D models for various process
systems under the guidance of a project engineer and associated project
team. This position plays a crucial role in the design and layout of
piping and equipment. Specific industry experience includes, but is not
limited to, oil and gas, chemicals, and power. The individual should
have experience with skidded equipment design and associated piping and
electrical layout, as well as piping and instrumentation diagrams
(P&IDs). A Mechanical Design Engineer works with engineers, architects,
and clients to ensure designs are completed to specifications and safety
regulations. A Mechanical Design Engineer at times may be required to
utilize manual drawing skills and may be required to visit client sites.
Responsibilities:
- Performs day-to-day creation and revision of necessary engineering
deliverables using AutoCAD and/or other computer-aided design
software packages. These engineering deliverables include, but are
not limited to, P&IDs, General Arrangement Drawings (GAs), detailed
equipment fabrication drawings, 2D and 3D models, and electrical
design and layout drawings.
- Interpret project information and meeting minutes with clients,
engineers, and project managers to ensure all technical drawing
packages are complete and meet the required specifications.
- Manages deliverables to meet scope and schedule of projects by
monitoring, reviewing, and checking work products to ensure
accuracy, quality, and timeliness.
- Communicate with the project engineer, project manager, or with the
lead mechanical designer while keeping stakeholders informed to
ensure that project drawing deliverables match contract
requirements.
- Collaborate with sales, marketing, process engineers, project
engineering team members (including instrumentation, electrical, and
field engineers) as necessary to support pre-contract or contract
work.
- Work closely with engineers and project managers to find innovative
methods, materials, and piping and equipment layouts when required
by client specifications.
- Supports the development of a design database of components, model
blocks, and design standards that minimize the time necessary to
complete system designs; solicits support from vendors and Fuel Tech
engineers to ensure completeness and accuracy of the design library.
- Complies with Fuel Tech policies, safety plans, quality practices,
and assigned goals.
- Stays up to date on the latest design software and industry trends.
Education and Experience:
- Requires a four-year technical degree (a Bachelor of Science in
mechanical engineering preferred).
- Requires a minimum of 5 to 7 years of demonstrated design experience
with evidence of increasing responsibilities, design proficiency and
innovative design skills.
- Familiarity with working on projects in the power, specialty
chemical, or oil and gas industries.
- Proficient in Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD.
- Knowledge and use of other CAD packages such as Navisworks and
SolidWorks.
- [Experience using technical tools such as FEA anal sis, various
mechanical design/modeling software packages, and more.]{#isPasted}
- Must possess a strong knowledge of machining and fabrication
tolerances and apply those appropriately for a given assignment.
- Requires significant experience with the design of industrial piping
systems for both conveyance of both gases and liquids, a working
knowledge of piping, mechanical, and structural components common in
process systems (including pumps, valves, and instrumentation), and
a general familiarity with electrical equipment and controls.
- [Familiarity with pipe stress analysis software (Bentley Auto PIPE,
CAESAR II) is a plus.]{#isPasted}
- The individual should have experience with skidded equipment design
and associated piping and electrical layout, as well as piping and
instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs).
- Requires practical experience with process industry standards and
safety codes including ASME B31.1, ASME B31.3, NFPA, and IBC.
- Demonstrated abilities for overcoming design challenges and
fabrication issues related to custom-designed process equipment.
- Proficient in equipment and component layout to ensure proper fit
and ease of construction and maintenance.
