Job Description:
The bus driver is responsible for the safe, efficient and punctual transportation of students on assigned route(s) or extra-curricular activities.
Duty Days: 177 (6 hours per day with the possibility of additional hours)
Salary Range:
Minimum: $25.50/hour (24-25 salary schedule)
Salary commensurate with related experience
Qualifications:
Must be at least 21 years of age
Hold and maintain a valid Class B CDL with P & S endorsements
Clearance of criminal history and driver’s license check
Acceptable references
Must pass an annual physical examination by an appropriate health professional designated by the employer
Ability to pass initial and random alcohol and drug screens by professionals designated by the employer
Must pass State Bus Driver Certification Course and successful completion of district behind the wheel training
Ability to obtain certification in basic first aid and CPR
Possess mental maturity and emotional stability to operate vehicle safely with distractions from students
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Ability to operate all types of buses in the BHISD fleet in a safe and effective manner
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
Ability to manage students in a safe and appropriate transportation environment
Ability to effectively communicate with parents and students
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- Drive students to and from school safely and punctually.
- Obey all traffic laws.
- Maintain student discipline on bus in a positive and caring manner. Work with Supervisor to resolve cases of misbehavior.
- Perform pre-trip and post trip inspections and submit work orders for necessary repairs.
- Keep bus clean.
- Report all accidents, vehicle damage and student injuries on proper forms.
- Maintain current student list, seating charts and route descriptions.
- Maintain appropriate level of fuel.
- Drive bus on extra-curricular activities and emergency evacuations as needed.
- Administer basic first aid as needed.
- Physically access and operate all emergency equipment and exits, including front, rear and side emergency doors, roof hatches and emergency windows.
- Be able to evacuate the bus from any emergency exit safely and in a timely manner.
- Be readily available to immediately assist passengers regardless of location in the bus.
- Regular attendance.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to maintain emotional control under stress.
- Other duties as assigned by Transportation Director.

Distractions from loud and boisterous students; Split work schedule; Exposure to extreme weather conditions and fluctuations in temperatures; Climbing bus steps, bending, crouching, pulling and pushing; Exposure to bodily fluids and other contagions. Maintain emotional control under stress. Continual sitting, reaching, and repetitive hand and arm motions; moderate exposure to extreme temperatures and vehicle fumes.
