Job Summary:
The Building Operations Technician exists to assist with the overall operation of the Greeley Ice Haus. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Recreation Supervisor – Greeley Ice Haus or Recreation Coordinator II - Hockey and Operations, however it is expected that this position exercises independent judgment and initiative. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate personnel, including seasonal and volunteer staff. Specific job duties may include but are not limited to: facility maintenance including responsibility for maintenance of the ice sheet, preventative maintenance and inspection of equipment, event maintenance including set up and tear down, risk management and inspection, customer service, and occasional supervision of part-time staff. Daily problem solving. Days, nights, occasional overnights, weekends, and holidays.
Experience, Knowledge, Skills:
Minimum Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- 1-3 years of experience in ice maintenance procedures.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Must be fully proficient in all ice maintenance procedures.
- Maintenance equipment including Zamboni, ice edger, and chippers.
- Must have operator’s knowledge of the ice refrigeration plant.
- Must have experience sharpening skates.
- General knowledge of procedures, practices or operations required.
- Able to follow detailed instructions.
- May require operation of several single purpose power tools/machines or equipment involving specialized training.
- Typically, on-the-job training of processes and procedures.

Essential Functions:
Facility maintenance:
- Routine resurfacing and maintenance of the ice sheet utilizing the Zamboni and ice edger, ice install and removal, custodial duties, hockey board/glass maintenance, and preventative maintenance of some facility assets.
Equipment maintenance:
- Inspection and preventative maintenance of equipment at the Ice Haus including Zamboni, edger, refrigeration system, skate sharpener, blade changing on Zamboni.
Event maintenance:
- Responsible for set-up and teardowns of events such as Grit hockey games, UNC hockey games, tournaments, figure skating competitions, and ice shows.
- Meets with customers, going over their setups to see if there are any last-minute changes.
- Monitors safety and security, enforcing policies and procedures, modeling great customer service.
- Troubleshoots, responds to requests, ensures all equipment including audio visual, tables, chairs, lights, are in good working order and are clean and well maintained.
- Decision making skills, good judgement, calm and thoughtful approaches to issues, quick responses, and conflict resolution skills.
Risk management:
- Conducts routine inspection of facility, recording of all tasks and inspections on electronic or paper checklists, and notification of facility issues to supervisors and/or Facilities.
- Responds to emergency situations including customer/staff injury, facility lockdown, customer incidents, and facility malfunction.
Customer service:
- Explains and enforces facility regulations, polices, and procedures.
- Positively represents the City in interactions with participants and the public.
- Provides assistance to patrons and the general public, answers questions regarding program, facility, and event specifics.
- Resolves program issues within established guidelines; makes suggestions for program improvements.
- Sharpens both customer and rental skates.
- Provides support to Ice Haus Staff in the front desk, skate guard, and concessions/alcohol operations.
Supervision:
- In the absence of Supervisor or Coordinators, this position will assume supervisory responsibility of part-time staff and facility operations.
Communication:
- Completion of all position checklists, daily verbal communication, electronic communication with supervisors and part-time staff via Teams/Connect2/email.
Problem solving:
- Solves a variety of problems in situations where there are substantially diversified procedures, specialized standards, and only limited standardization.
- Changing priorities or differing situations requires the incumbent to consider which among many procedures should be followed in what sequence to achieve the required job results.
- Requires reasoning to produce a practical course of action within the established process. Choices fall within the range of specified, acceptable standards, alternatives, and technical practices.
- Example(s): use of the facility occurs days, nights, weekends and some holidays, some events are until 12:00am. Ensure a safe and secure environment is maintained, for both customers and staff members.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- In the absence of Supervisor or Coordinators, this position will assume supervisory responsibility of part-time staff and facility operations.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
- Manual labor and requires prolonged standing and walking.
- Able to lift 50 lbs. on a frequent basis.
- Manual dexterity to operate ice maintenance equipment, cleaning equipment, move objects, operate hand, and power tools, move and bend, twist and stoop, climb ladders in the performance of job duties.
- Mobility to walk over uneven or icy surfaces and during snow removal.
- Marginal to moderate hazards that are typically predictable or well protected against.
- Perform work primarily indoors with minor exposure to outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Work on the ice surface and surrounding perimeter.
- Stand and walk for a prolonged period.
- The noise level within the Ice Haus is occasionally loud.
- The ice rink is a cold environment.
