Sidwell Friends, a coeducational PK-12 Quaker day school with campuses in Washington, DC, and Bethesda, MD, is currently seeking a full-time Building Engineer. This position is primarily based at our D.C. campus with occasional presence required at our Bethesda, MD campus.
The Building Engineer II role is critical to maintaining a sanitary, safe, and comfortable environment for students, staff, and visitors. Responsibilities include executing skilled and semi-skilled tasks necessary for the safe and efficient operation of HVAC units and auxiliary equipment, as well as ensuring the timely completion of assignments.
The position involves a commitment and necessitates active participation in meetings and regular communication with the principals and supervisors to plan daily tasks. Additionally, the role requires coordinating special events and meetings, prioritizing building and facility safety, and providing essential information to school and supervisory personnel regarding work orders and procedures.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
Key duties also encompass daily inspections of school facilities to uphold safe operations, meticulous maintenance of documentation, operation of HVAC systems, plumbing, electrical, and related equipment, as well as routine and preventive maintenance of heating and air conditioning equipment. Moreover, the preparation of various documentation, including those related to preventive maintenance schedules, work and vacation schedules, work orders, and building inspection reports, is a critical aspect of this role.
In addition to these tasks, the employee will be responsible for preparing facilities for daily operations, proposing prudent policies, procedures, and actions to ensure efficient operation of maintenance/custodial services and regulatory compliance, performing necessary repairs within the building, submitting work orders when required, and carrying out related duties as assigned to ensure an efficient and effective work environment. Other duties include but are not limited to helping with snow removal, shelving, play/theater props, physical education equipment, assisting with periodic safety drills, etc. The ideal candidate will also prepare for the many events held on campus, including set up and breakdowns.
This position entails 10% sitting, 70% walking, and 20% standing, and involves exposure to temperature extremes and hazardous conditions. Furthermore, as an essential role, the employee will be required to report to work regardless of weather or school conditions.
Other Responsibilities:
- Execute routine and preventive maintenance on heating and air conditioning equipment, thereby efficiently maintaining climate control equipment and ensuring satisfactory climate control in buildings.
- Prepare various documentation, such as preventive maintenance schedules for facilities, work and vacation schedules, work orders, and building inspection reports to provide written support and convey information effectively.
- Offer recommendations related to policies, procedures, and actions (e.g. equipment, products, vendors) to provide valuable information and direction ensuring the efficient operation of maintenance/custodial services and regulatory compliance.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to ensure an efficient and effective functioning workspace.
- Ready facilities for daily operations, including tasks like opening gates, building access doors, disarming security systems, and performing minor repairs to ensure operational and safe occupancy.
- Attend meetings such as workshops and in-service sessions to effectively convey and receive information.
- Additional duties will include snow removal, shelving, play/theater props, physical education equipment, assistance with safety drills, and preparations for campus events.
Required Skills, Experience and Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent; technical school training is a plus
- Minimum of Six (6) years of extensive experience in HVAC and cooling tower maintenance and repair.
- Minimum of Five (5) years of progressive experience with the operation, maintenance, electrical, and plumbing systems.
- Job-related education that meets the organization prerequisites
- Certificates & License: EPA Type III Certification required (NIULPE 3rd Class, Maryland 1st, or DC 6th
- Class Operating Engineers (License is a plus)
- Significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; frequent climbing and balancing; frequent stooping,
- kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; significant fine finger dexterity
- Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
Salary
- Salary Range $75,000-$101,999. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
