JOB TITLE: BUILDING CUSTODIAN
DEPARTMENT: COUNCIL ON AGING
EMPLOYMENT TYPE: FULLTIME/NON-EXEMPT
UNION/NON-UNION: SUPERVISORY AND PROFESSIONAL UNION
The Building Custodian is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and general upkeep of the Senior Center. This position ensures that all public and employee areas are clean, well-organized, and properly maintained, contributing to a welcoming and professional environment for members, visitors, and staff.
Primary duties are cleaning, housekeeping, and operation and maintenance of building equipment. Duties also include maintenance of grounds, walks, lawns & shrubbery. The Custodian is also responsible for setting up and breaking down of furnishings needed for various classes/programs during the day. The maintenance duties are semi-skilled and do not require trade or craft knowledge.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ensures building & premises, including sidewalks, driveways and recreational areas neat and clean at all times.
- Dust mopping, sweeping, wet mopping and spray buffing floors; Vacuuming carpets & upholstery.
- Cleaning restroom fixtures and keeping restrooms supplied with paper towels and supplies.
- Dusting & cleaning walls, doors, windows, woodwork and other floor surfaces.
- Cleaning elevator and staircases.
- Order and maintain supplies
- Notifying supervisor of equipment & facilities needing repair or replacement.
- Performs routine maintenance such as changing light bulbs, minor repairs, and reporting larger maintenance issues to the supervisor.
- Assist in setting up and breaking down tables, chairs, and other equipment for programs, meetings, and events held at the Senior Center.
- Raising & lowering the American flag.
- Washing windows, walls, vents & radiators.
- Empty wastebaskets, recycle bins, and other disposal units in a timely manner.
- Assist in seasonal tasks, including snow shoveling and sanding around building entrances, walkways, and parking area, cutting lawns and trimming bushes, and keeping outdoor areas tidy.
- Checking daily to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working.
- Moving furniture, equipment or materials within buildings as required when requested.
- Complying with local laws & procedures for the storage & disposal of trash, rubbish, & waste
- Performs all other duties as assigned or required.
- May be responsible for opening and closing the building each day (turning alarm on and off) and staying open for meetings until all occupants clear the building.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
- General experience in janitorial and maintenance work is preferred.
- Working knowledge of modern building cleaning materials, methods, and equipment and ability to use them economically and efficiently.
- Ability to accept responsibility & work with minimal supervision.
- Requires strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with a diverse population, including employees and building visitors.
- Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The incumbent works in various municipal buildings and locations, primary location being Senior Center. While performing the duties of the Custodian, the incumbent is required to: interact and communicate frequently with the public, government officials, other staff members and boards, and/or third parties transacting business with the Senior Center. Exposure to cleaning chemicals and materials. Occasional outdoor work required during inclement weather (e.g., snow removal). Must be available for possible emergency call-ins including evenings and weekends, may be responsible for opening and closing the building each day (turning alarm on and off) and staying open for meetings until all occupants clear the building.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to utilize all equipment, devices, tools used in custodial work. Move throughout the Senior Center which may include flights of stairs if elevator is in use or out of order. Regular and sustained periods of strenuous physical exertion, requiring stability to lift, carry and position heavy objects utilizing proper mechanics and techniques. May periodically be required to operate a computer to access e-mail. Continuous walking, standing, climbing; frequent periods requiring sustained uncomfortable physical positions. Must be able to push/pull/lift objects weighing up to 50lbs.
HOURS:
40 hours per week
Monday–Friday, 10:00am - 6:30pm
SALARY:
Starting salary $16.60 - $17.52
Annual increases up to $22.98 per hour
