Primary responsibility is the technical supervision of all major events at American Airlines Center, including all Dallas Mavericks and Stars games, and most 3rd party events. Position assumes the duties of the Director of Broadcast Services, when unavailable, in supervising all technical staff and managing all A/V activities. Trains, mentors and develops incoming personnel under the guidance of the Director of Broadcast Services. Responsible for the functionality and readiness of all AV, Audio and Arena Display Systems in the arena under the direction of the Director of Broadcast Services.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervise up to 10 key technical personnel including, the EIC (replay room), AV staff and the Arena Display Technician and conducts training sessions for these and other essential technical personnel in the operation of all major broadcast systems.
Essential Functions: include the following, other duties may be assigned.
- Trains, mentors and develops incoming technical personnel, which includes conducting facility orientation, training on proper use of equipment, and teaching logical trouble shooting procedures that aids them in diagnosing technical issues on their own.
- Directs the activities of the part time AV staff responsible for setting up internal and corporate meetings and functions. Duties of these AV personnel include setting microphones, LCD projectors, TV’s, DVD’s, portable PA and rental gear and assisting the event staff and 3rd party clients in the use of these equipment systems.
- Assumes the duties of various positions temporarily in supporting live arena events when the positions are not filled, including the art of shading cameras and technical directing.
- Offers technical supervision and support to the part time Arena Display Technician as well as the EIC and Replay crew during peak demand events and provides assistance during critical times of need such as major equipment failure.
- Conducts extensive equipment research, offers recommendations and monitors warranty maintenance issues for purchasing equipment and software which have a direct impact on the creation of the operational budgets.
- Works closely with the Director of Broadcast Services to assist technical representatives from the NBA, NHL, the Dallas Mavericks, the Dallas Stars, as well as 3rd party clients in managing their technical projects in an effort to ensure the success of their events within American Airlines Center.
- Works closely with the Director of Broadcast Services in creating effective strategies and plan designs for expansion of technical infrastructure and systems throughout the arena. Serves as a technical producer for larger scale events that require a much broader scope and higher level of technical production.
- Creates and designs integration plans using Visio or CAD design software for the strategic planning and documentation of facility control rooms, edit suites, clubs, concourses and meeting spaces.
- Creates and addresses needs such as mapping out plans for fiber optic deployment, improvements to arena productions and develops trends in corporate media presentations.
- Supervises the Broadcast Maintenance Engineer in the development of a comprehensive maintenance plan for the AV systems throughout the facility, including supervision of the operational and organizational strategies necessary to ensure a highly functional and reliable technical infrastructure for all part-time operators to successfully perform their duties.
- Coordinates activities with the IT department as necessary to ensure the scoring and data systems are functioning properly.
- Oversees AV preventative maintenance programs to include scope, scheduling and records documentation.
- Other duties as assigned by the Director of Broadcast Services.
Education/Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The employee should also have the following qualifications:
- Associates Degree required; Bachelor’s Degree (B.S.) in Broadcasting, Communications or in a related field is preferred;
- Minimum of 10 years hands on experience in live audio or broadcast video production required;
- Minimum of 2 years supervisory experience;
- Experience in all aspects of audio engineering, operations, production and programming;
- Working knowledge of OES scoring systems used for statistical/data displays during sporting events and a strong knowledge of AV wiring infrastructures, signal flow as it relates to routers and patch panels, and RF system signal flow and operation;
- Knowledge of TCP/IP (Transmission control protocol/Internet protocol as it relates to setting up a communication/control network between the American Airlines Center audio and video broadcast equipment;
- Possess a thorough working knowledge of all types of industry specialized tools and the proper technical procedures to utilize these tools for terminating audio and video connectors and soldering equipment;
- Educational background /experience in signal flow and troubleshooting procedures;
- Ability to solve problems under severe time restraints;
- Possess a strong working knowledge and software programming experience of the following equipment: Digi-design, Yamaha and Mackie mixers, London, BSS and Soundweb technology, Shure and Sennheiser microphones, Clearcom and Riedel intercom systems, and LCD projectors;
- Thorough knowledge of the basic concepts of component engineering relating to Public Address systems and the facility’s broadcast video control room equipment;
- Advanced technical communication skills on a component level;
- Ability to remain current on skills for technical and facility trends to address future needs;
- Skill in estimating time and materials required of assigned work projects;

Physical Demands/Work Environment:
- Position requires the ability to reach with hands and arms use hands to handle, or feel, stand, climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, walk and sit;
- Position requires the ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds while twisting and/or turning;
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however, during events the noise level may be loud;
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule in a 24/7 work environment, including evenings, weekends and holidays as required.
- Position requires working at extreme heights on a cat walk above the arena floor.
