Job Summary:
The role is responsible for performing breast ultrasound examinations in accordance with established protocols. This involves preparing patients, operating ultrasound equipment, and collaborating with radiologists to ensure accurate imaging for diagnostic purposes. The technician must maintain a high level of patient care, confidentiality, and professionalism.
Key Responsibilities:
- Patient Preparation:
- Greet patients and explain the ultrasound procedure.
- Ensure patients are comfortable and positioned correctly for imaging.
- Obtain relevant patient history and document any clinical symptoms.
- Ultrasound Imaging:
- Perform breast ultrasound scans according to physician orders and standardized protocols.
- Operate and maintain ultrasound equipment, ensuring images are clear and of high quality.
- Identify normal and abnormal breast anatomy, including masses, cysts, and other irregularities.
- Use Doppler technology as needed to assess blood flow within breast tissue.
- Collaboration:
- Work closely with radiologists to review images and provide additional views as requested.
- Communicate findings and any concerns to the radiologist promptly.
- Assist with biopsy procedures when necessary, providing real-time imaging guidance.
- Record Keeping:
- Document all imaging procedures and maintain accurate patient records.
- Ensure images are stored correctly within the medical imaging system.
- Adhere to all confidentiality and HIPAA regulations regarding patient information.
- Equipment Maintenance:
- Perform routine checks on ultrasound equipment and report any malfunctions.
- Keep the imaging room clean and stocked with necessary supplies.
- Patient Care:
- Provide emotional support to patients who may be anxious or distressed.
- Follow up on patient queries and provide information as appropriate.
- Ensure patient safety and comfort throughout the procedure.
Qualifications:
- Education:
- Completion of an accredited ultrasound technology program with a focus on breast imaging.
- Certification:
- ARDMS (American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography) certification in Breast Ultrasound is required.
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification is preferred.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in breast ultrasound imaging is preferred.
- Breast Certified experience is required.
- Experience in or with Whole Breast ultrasound screening is a plus.
- Experience with ultrasound-guided biopsy procedures is a plus.
- Ability to work independently as a Breast Ultrasound Tech with a high volume of patients.
- Skills:
- Proficiency in operating ultrasound equipment and interpreting ultrasound images.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to identify subtle abnormalities.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Sensitivity and compassion when dealing with patients.
Working Conditions:
- This role involves standing for long periods and requires the ability to move and lift patients as needed.
- Exposure to various clinical environments, with adherence to all infection control protocols.
