$22.00 to $27.00 per hour (per diem available for those who qualify)
1st Shift – 6:00am – 2:30pm
2nd Shift – 3:00pm – 11:30pm
Lead Marine has immediate openings for Boilermaker Journeymen Mechanics in the Norfolk Naval Shipyard Industry. A Boilermaker Journeymen is responsible for installation, lay-out, assembly and replacement of boilers. The Journeymen Boilermaker works from blueprints, sketches, specifications, layout templates, process instructions, and job orders.
Responsibilities & Functional Knowledge
- A specialist mechanic must demonstrate an expert knowledge of the skills, functional knowledge and abilities required to perform tasks in these and related areas of responsibility.
- Expert knowledge means that the mechanic understands how to perform tasks in these categories (including, but not limited to, the specific tasks identified below) and is able to complete them independently, teach others how to complete the tasks, and serve as a leader regarding these areas of knowledge as well as overall project scope.
- This also means that the mechanic has the necessary level of knowledge of the equipment, protective gear, and machinery required to complete these tasks.
- A specialist mechanic also is expected to strategize independently, problem-solve, and contribute to project planning and execution.
Qualifications
- Boiler System Testing: Pressure test the boiler, Know boiler system, Re-facing, Re-facing Manhole or Handhole, Machine the seating surface, Use resurfacing machine.
- Refurbishing: Weld and repair seating surfaces that need alterations, Re-facing refurbished items once altered.
- Retubing: Install new tubes in the boiler Read a tube identification drawing, Expand tubes and the seats, Use expanders and pins to expand tubes, Must understand the expanding requirements based on the size of tube.
- Burning: Knowledgeable regarding burning, Knowledgeable regarding use of hook up torch/light torch.
- Blueprint: Read, understand, and interpret advanced blueprints to perform task required.
- Refractory: Lay brick work in the furnace in accordance with the drawings, Get through access area by opening the door on the firebox, Familiar with the materials to include anchor and burner tiles.
- Tack Welding: How to grind, Preferred tack welding certification course, Preferred SMAW and FCAW or FCA certifications Strongly Preferred But Required.
- Basic ship fitting skills. Set up and perform ship fitting tasks. Sketch vent and develop basic patterns.
- Use CFM meter to measure and balance vent. Work galley and head stainless work, including galley equipment, stainless steel tables, stainless steel trim and flashing, water closets and urinal partitions, water closet doors and showers.
- A specialist mechanic must demonstrate an expert understanding of naval vessel compartments, number systems and related vessel terminology for the CG, DDG, and LHD ships. Must be able to read, write and comprehend simple instructions.
- Must be able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral or diagram form.
- Must be able to calculate and understand units of measure, including fractions and decimals.
- Must know how to measure using a scale and tape measure.
- Minimum Relevant Experience is 7 to 10 years.
