Department Summary
The Institute of Molecular Biology (IMB) is a research institute that reports to the Vice President for Research and Innovation. We have 18 labs and approximately 150 employees, including 45 graduate students who train in our labs. We have an administrative structure, which includes accounting, purchasing, personnel, PI support, building management, and three service centers. Our annual budget is about $9.5 million, primarily from federal research and training grants.
Position Summary
The purpose of this position is to support the University of Oregon Bioscience Career Development Program and Graduate Training Programs in Molecular Biology. The successful applicant will be an integral member of the career development team and will (i) interact with graduate students and postdocs to help them explore and prepare for career opportunities in the biosciences, (ii) work with the IMB Head of Career Development to implement career development activities and to foster relationships with existing and potential external partners, and (iii) evaluate and improve the Career Development and Graduate Training Programs by collecting program data and working with faculty to design and assess program interventions. This position reports to the IMB Head of Career Development. Undergraduate student assistants may report to this position.
Essential functions of the position include:
• Maintain the Program Website, including a calendar of events. Identify and post links to relevant job and internship opportunities.
• Maintain a database of program alumni and clients, and mine the database as needed to support Program activities.
• Collaborate with the Head of Career Development and a student committee on orchestration of the Career Exploration Seminar Series. Eventually, take full responsibility for this series.
• Assist the Head of Career Development with workshops and other program activities, including the Careers in Bioscience Course, to ensure that students receive the support they need and that the activities run smoothly.
• In conjunction with training grant directors and/or external program evaluators, collect information from graduate students, faculty, alumni, and other sources to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of our Career Development and Graduate Training Programs. Work with a graduate program evaluation team to assess program data and design potential interventions.
• Maintain records of program activities, and provide regular activity reports as requested by supervisor.
• Perform other tasks as needed to foster the success of the Career Development and Graduate Training Programs.
Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in a life science field.
• Experience with basic office software, including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint.
• Excellent English language written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications
• Advanced degree in a life science field.
• Prior work experience in a related non-academic setting (such as private industry, non-profit, government).
• Experience mentoring undergraduates or graduate students.
• Experience with website maintenance, and building and mining databases.
