Odyssey Systems is seeking a Biological Technician II to support the Structural Vaccinology Group at theWalter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) in the Biological Research & Development (BRD) Branch located in Silver Spring, Maryland.
WRAIR has a distinguished history of serving America’s military. It was founded by the U.S. Army Surgeon General George Sternberg in 1893 as the Army Medical School and is widely recognized as the oldest school of public health and preventive medicine in the United States. The vision of the Biological Research & Development (BRD) Branch is to lead and support US and international emerging infectious disease diagnostics, drug and vaccine development efforts by providing knowledge, expertise, training, and products for Force Health Protection in support of infectious disease mortality reduction and elimination worldwide. This effort is in support of the Biological Research & Development (BRD) Branch's mission to develop highly efficacious biologics as effective medical countermeasures against emerging infectious diseases.
Responsibilities:
Duties include, but not limited to:
- Aliquot and record storage of biological samples to include mouse, rhesus and human sera;
- Express proteins in bacterial cells and mammalian cells and characterize proteins;
- Characterize product purity, composition, and stability;
- Conduct immunological assays (e.g. ELISA).
- Clone and express monoclonal antibody genes in mammalian cells,
- Carry out functional assays to study the biological function of antibodies against diseases such as malaria;
- Work with animals (mice and Rhesus serum) at the direction of the PI;
- Perform laboratory assays to analyze immune responses;
- Support down-selection of vaccines and monoclonal antibodies using mouse model;
- Conduct immunological assays to analyze animal serum and cellular responses;
- Statistically analyze the data and support generation of scientific papers;
- Maintain a safe and clean work area, while supporting a safe workplace ensuring awareness of and observingappropriate safety and occupational health rules and regulations;
- Comply and attend all mandated safety training sessions relative to efforts in this task and report any infractions of safety procedures;
- Maintain up to date records of all lab work, including paper and electronic files;
- Perform laboratory administrative functions as assigned to include, but not limited to, monitoring and responding to temperature controllers using a datatron system,
- Attend lab meetings and contribute to daily laboratory operations;
- Maintain supplies and equipment inventory tracking;
- Support ordering laboratory supplies;
- Operate government-owned equipment according to Standard Operating Procedures;
- Prepare progress reports/technical reports;
- Assist in writing production records; maintaining records, and electronic files;
- Maintain open communications on experimental progress and work/safety-related communications in real-time
Qualifications:
Minimum Required Qualifications
Citizenship: Must be a US citizen
Clearance: Ability to obtain NACI
Education: B.S. in Biochemistry, Protein Chemistry, Immunology, Microbiology or similar biological sciences
Years of Experience: Minimum of 5 years experience in the laboratory
Certifications: Familiarity with cGCP, cGLP and/or cGMP
Preferred Qualifications
Clearance: Ability to obtain Secret
Education: M.S. in Biochemistry, Protein Chemistry, Immunology, Microbiology or similar biological sciences
Years of experience: 5+ years experience in the laboratory
Certifications: Training or certification in cGCP, cGLP and/or cGMP
Technical Skills
- Experience with infectious disease agents
- Experience with protein isolation, purification and characterization
- Vaccine construct design
Interpersonal Skills
- Attention to detail, trouble-shooting, critical thinking, reliability, problem-solving, communication
